November 17, 2006 The Clarion r Letters to the Editor Miss K incites attacks at Ingles Dear Editor, This letter is in response to the article in the last edition titled “Shirtless man runs after two female students near Ingles.” It has come to this my attention that there may have, in fact, been a motive that led this unidentified man to chase these girls. Sources close to my kitchen tell me that the man was severely angered by the “Miss K” fashion ad vice column and simply could not stand it any more. The man was obviously a reasonable human being before the column was initially published. He was pushed over the edge when informed that it wasn’t fashionable to wear his Crocs any more. This was the last straw. He quit his job, starting eating all meals at Twin Dragons, di vorced his wife, and disposed of all of his T- shirts. He had been spotted at Ingles before the night of the 20*, harassing those patrons who were wearing tight shorts, cut-off t-shirts, and worst of all— the dreaded Crocs. He would be rate them with foul language, eggs, tomatoes, bonkers (I really want to know where he found these once extinct 80’s candies), half-full water bottles, and com dogs. We can equate this once gentle man chasing these specific girls to a mere Opinion coincidence, but I believe there is more here than just a random display of emotion. Maybe the reason he targeted these two girls (Katie Berube and Molly Carlson) is because they are in fact the authors of “Miss K.” Could this be true? Could these two fine upstanding Brevard College students not have the courage to attach their names to a column that has no other purpose than to poke fun at the students of our campus? I truly believe in the rights of the press, however I also believe if you have the audacity to publish a column that does nothing more then get you a few kicks for making fun our of your fellow students, at least have the courage to put your name on it. Proudly donning my Crocs, cut off t- shirt, and pants with lettering, Seth Lawrence Mathlery Dear Mr. Matherly, Thank you for your letter. The whole point of Miss K being an unsigned piece is that it repre sents the opinion ofmultiple people. If we put a name on it, then it (and columns like it) cannot be passed down to future generations ofClarion staff. Citing Miss K as a reason for an attack on students is a bit shallow. The man at Ingles was most likely a victim of the unemployment, drug addiction, and mental illness that deeply affects The Clarion Staff Adam Beeson Matt Rutherford Editor in Chief Managing Editor Tom Cowan- News Editor Zach Browning- Sports Editor Molly Carlson- Layout & Design John Billingsley- Photography Zack Harding- Arts & Life Editor Jamie Michaels- Opinion Editor Emily Wade- Copy Editor Dr. John Padgett- Faculty Advisor Staff Writers Lange Eve Amethyst Green Chelsea Deming Josie Guinn Unsigned editorials represent the collective opinion of the staff of The Clarion, Other opinions expressed on this page are those of respective authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the faculty, staff or administration of Brevard College. ■Letters Policy The Clarion welcomes letters to the editor. To poke fun at him is heartless and much lower than anything Miss K is doing. Miss K is aimed at a privileged class of students at private college. If they can’t take a joke, per haps we should start making fun of homeless people instead. Would that suit you ? As for the authors of Miss K, each week the topic is decided upon by about five or six people. These people can vary from week to week. Katie and Molly happen to be part of it, as they are the resident art majors and cartoonists on staff. Nobody said you couldn’t write in a suggestion for Miss K. In fact, we would love it. And of course a fashion cartoon pokes fun at people! It is meant to befunny and self depreci ating of the campus as a whole. Keeps you read ing doesn’t it? Miss K Former Brevard student publishes second book Brevard College might like to know that Steven Carter has published his second novel. Famous Writers School, with Counterpoint Press, a di vision of Perseus Books Group, NY. More about the book can be found at several websites (Ama zon, Barnes and Noble, Counterpoint Press, Perseus Books Group, Weekend Edition Sun- day-NPR, Studio 360-NPR, and Upward Spi- ral-the book’s own site and blog). I thought you might like to know about this, as Steve Carter is my son. He took his first college English class at Brevard College in the fall of 1979. His instructor told him he had writing talent, and she had an essay he had writ ten published in The Clarion. His career actu ally began in one of your classrooms in the lovely town where we used to live.
