The Clarion Volume 72, Issue 16 SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 Weather page 2 February 2, 2007 What will become of the pool? by Aaron Palmer Managing Editor According to President Van Horn, this is the “Year of the pool”. Yes, at one point in time Brevard did have a pool. The greenhouse- style room that faces the soccer field was once filled with active students, boaters, community members and even water Numerous classes were held in the pool; most were taught by Instructor of Aquatics and Health, Nancy Ballinger The WLEE de partment and Outing Club regu larly held roll clinics and swim tests for students as well as inter ested members of the community. More funds were brought in from community members who paid to use the services of the gym. Stu dents were also free to use the pool during any of its open hours, much like the gym. Swimming is an excellent aero bic activity, being that it works the entire body. The sports teams used the free service as well. Base ball players practiced swinging and pitching against the resistance of the water Soccer players swam and ran for the same reasons. At the time it was on the verge of closure, the department needed $500 in repairs. Most of the money was needed for a phone and landline into the room for emer gency reasons. Cones were needed for the diving blocks, which we already had. Most importantly, a dehumidifier system was in dire need. The original had been in stalled around sixty years ago with the pool. see Pool, page 11 Students adhere to new smoking policy 1 CAMPUS EVENTS CALENDAR Feb 4 Super Bowl Party in the Coltrane Underground hosted by CAB Feb 5 Game Night in Coltrane Underground hosted by Campus Rec Feb 6 Ski/Snowboard Trip with Outdoor Rec Feb 7 Clinic on Bike Maintenance hosted by Outdoor Rec Spring Outdoor Fitness Series Open Mic Night @ 8 pm hosted by CAB Feb 8 RA and SA Applications Due Students using new smoking areas Photo by John Biiiingsiey Wliat's Inside?
