Page 10 ARTS & LIFE The Clarion \ April 27, 2007 Megastars in Greenville, SC by Zack Harding Arts & Life Editor Blue IVIan Group: How to be a megastar tour 2.0 Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, SC April 17»^ 7:30 p.m. If you get the chance to see any incarnation of the blue man group, do it. You will not regret it. The group recently performed on the “How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0” at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, SC, and it really was a unique and fun experience. It’s hard to categorize the show that this group puts on: part performance art, part rock concert, part com edy routine, part athletic stunts, part deep-seated societal meta phor And the group excels within all of these genres of entertain ment. Right before the group hit the stage, the display screens played a video showing root canal proce dures, before quickly being inter rupted by saying “sorry, the den tistry convention was last week, this week is the blue man group,” which set the stage for the bizarre humor that was to follow. From that point on, the audi ence was bombarded by wild, per cussion fueled music and vibrant, occasionally psychedelic, visuals for the rest of the night. An early high point was the teamwork skit where one of the blue men drums on the pvc pipes that the other two are holding. After much hu morous problem solving, the trio finally works together and as sembles the entire pipe into one instrument and the back-up band joins in to create a full-blown rock song. Much of their show features such a balance of funny situations coupled with serious overtones. Occasionally though, the music takes a break while the blue men go out into the audience and inter act in various ways. Their show is probably one of the most inter active and crowd participatory events out there, considering the size and draw of the event. on what is called the tubulum, which looks like a mix of vacuum cleaner hose and pvc pipes. Tracy Bonham sung lead in this song and it was devastatingly beautiful. Seeing the blue man group is something that everyone should do at least once, and there is such a wide variety of performances that all should be able to fmd some thing they like. The highlight of the night was definitely their cover of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” The blue men play the famous intro to the song C/a£ a. bwwuC? £^o~^ou. AJuwwuA, £m. ^Ius. afvaa!?
