April 27, 2007 \ The Clarion NEWS Page 3 New core curriculum for the fall by Matt Rutherford Editor in Chief Some changes to the current cur riculum were passed by the Brevard College Faculty on March 30, 2007. Students who enter in fall of 2007 will take the new BCE 111 course. This course will combine both First Year Forum and First Year Seminar into one three-hour credit course—BCE 111 Perspec tives. Many of the students who took the original two courses will come back as sophomore teaching assistants. In addition to the BCE alter ations, there are three additional changes. Area IV of the core re quirements is meant to help stu dents understand human experi ence through music, literature, drama, and the visual arts. Litera ture courses are being moved from Area I.C. to the new Area IV B. This will require every student to take a literature course. However, these courses are not restricted to English. Students may opt for a class such as Mythology or Exis tential Literature. Introduction to Communica tions or COM 110 and Business Communications (ORG 205), will be moved to the Area I.C. Area 1 .C. is now defined as meeting the goals of effective communication and critical thinking. Students may also opt to take other classes such as ORG 103, PHI 105, MAT 200, and others. Health and Wellness courses, which are in Area V, will now only require two credits instead of three. This was done in order to help reduce the total number of hours within the core. One of these courses must have physical activ ity in order to count. Overall, the new core will re quire one more credit hour than the previous core. SGA Report; Tom Collins addresses gym hours by Lauren Fortner Staff Writer Athletic Director Tom Collins came to SGA this week to discuss some issues about the gym’s op erating hours. Collins said that he was open to people’s opinions and welcomed any concerns of students. Collins reported that the reason for the weight room’s cur rent hours is because of problems finding supervision. Students suggested using work study to fill this position and Collins stated that this had been attempted but no reliable work study students had been found yet. Collins stated that now that he knows this is a problem that students care about he will at tempt to address it. Collins explained the athletic department is going through a pro cess of major transformation and the hours of the gym have been overlooked because of a matter of priorities. Collins assured SGA that he will come up with a plan. Dean Yowell is making a task force to review the BCE 410 Se nior Capstone course over the summer SGA recently found out that to build a patio outside of Myers Dining Hall a ramp will be needed for adequate access. DJ Sticky Fingers was basically a DJ that played mainly rap and hip hop music. Cletus Baltimore was made up by our current and former Brevard College students, and the type of music they played was more of a j am band per se, for example Wide Spread Panic and Phish. Intellec tual Telepathy was made up by members of the Brevard commu nity and played hip hop and rap music. Soul Driven Train is a jazz blues mix with some rock and roll music. I liked them the best, be sides the Present’s band, because I’m a big fan of jazz and blues music. This band was more of a Dixie jazz blues band. At one and three o’clock in the afternoon there were tree plantings where members of the community planted two different types of trees. The trees were planted in the area along the creek where two big willow trees were recently uprooted. The Brevard College Recycling Club was responsible for his activity. There were many students from different majors and from all places from campus that came out to help plant the trees. I’ve never seen students get so excited about planting a tree be fore. Earth Fest was a very success ful event this year I had a lot of fun. I learned some new things and I hope all of you that were there had fun and learned some new stuff like me.
