The Clarion | April 27, 2007 — Opinion — A fond farewell from the graduating staff Dear Readers, The future is blurry for each of us. You never know what waits around the next comer My time on this campus has been filled with surprises. As a freshman, I thought people who were only interested in their studies would surround me. When my sophomore year came, I realized I was a totally different person and I was slowly growing up. Classification as a junior brought the real workload and I found out college was not always so simple. That same year I embarked on a journey to Europe, which I would later write an entire book about as a senior I never once thought I would become a groomed writer If someone had told me that while I was in high school, I would have been in hysterics. The same goes for being engaged. So much has happened in such a short time and more interesting things are just about to happen. My period with The Clarion is coming to a close quickly. I remember when I first took the COM 105 course. Part of the course was to help revive the campus newspaper—of course this didn’t happen for a while. I sat there in the last meeting, when Dr Padgett asked me to be the Entertainment Editor, now called the Arts and Life Editor I never imagined I would actually be the one in charge of a real publication. I have seen the newspa per go from a publication written by five dedicated souls to being put together by a classroom full of interested students. I want to see that continue. I hope when I become an alumni that I will hear The Clarion is still informing, pushing campus buttons, and alive. After I graduate, I will be headed to New York to pursue a career in journalism or public relations. I’m not sure what exactly fate holds in store for me, but I do know its time for me to move on. I’m ready for a big change. It is time to go. Thank you all for everything. Matt Rutherford, 2007 Editor in Chief For my last and final article I do not care to speak to any of you readers; ya’ll can read this if by some amazing chance you are interested, but this is just meant to be a few parting words to the Clarion its self Really it is between the Clarion and I. My first of your credit hours was for an intro to journalism lab with Dr Padgett. As an undecided junior, this was a very positive turning point in my college career I have written for you ever since and I think I want to pursue journalism as a career Because you are such a small paper, you quickly gave me the opportunity to cover the campus’ biggest news stories. It was stressful because any mistake I made had the potential to become printed in your pages and some of them were. Despite that, the job you have given me has always been fun because I take great interest in most of my news stories, especially those involving campus crimes. I am surprised I haven’t had any competition for my job as crime reporter, because I don’t see how any other beat could be as interesting. Every week I sat down with Security Director Stan Jacobsen to collect the latest round of vandalism, theft, drug cases, complaints of stalkers and more. Most weeks I get at least one thing that I think is worthy of a story and I am usually able to get most of my informa tion from Jacobsen. I am very thankful to him for being so open and cooperative with me. I’ve also enjoyed interviewing many other students, faculty, and staff I enjoy the interviewing process and I love the fact that people here have been willing to talk to me with trust that I will write fairly competent article. Some of my stories have been about serious incidents including rape and other student code violations, which have sadly gotten students expelled. Most of the incidents, however, I find amusing and when writing the security reports I often intend for some humor to come across while I try to keep everything objective and simple at the same time. I think there is plenty of room for creativity in objective news writing. There are millions of different ways to write a simple news story and when writing each story I spend a lot of time looking for the way that is easiest for the readers, who we know are lazy and want their news to just flow of the page. I am thankful to the other writers who have taken up the rest of the slack by covering things like campus events, which I find to be a little bit boring though worth of being in your pages. I have also never been one to fatten you with excessive opinions because clearly this is hurting your appearance. I do think, however, that you should continue to poke fun at your readers with insulting cartoons because they need it - and you need them to Send Email to: clarion@brevard.edu continued on next page
