September 21, 2007 \ The Clarion NEWS Page 5 AEC is for everyone by Emily Clark Business Manager Talking peace by Carrie Brown Staff Writer Last Friday, September 14, 2007, peace talks were held between the President of Sudan, the Pope, and the Premier of Italy. InDarfur, Sudan a genocide has been taking place since February 2003. Genocide can be defined as any act with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Millions of people have been killed, displaced, or are starving in refugee camps. The genocide is taking place because of a conflict between rebel groups and the Sudan government. Sudan’s president Omar A1 Bashir has continually denied any affiliation with rebel groups or Sudan militia inflicting genocide tactics on the people of Darfur The United States of America has recognized the fact that the conflict happening in Darfur, Sudan is genocide. The peace talks were held to coincide with U.N. peace talks hoping to bring about a cease fire. There have been two cease fires since the genocide began in February 2003 and both were ignored. Welcome to Gauleyfest! by Jacob Roland Staff Writer Gauley Fest occurs at the end of every September and is the world’s largest kayaking event. Last year, over 5,000 people joined the festivity. The festival started in 1983 by the locals of the Gauley River to stop a hydroelectric project that would have put an end to Gauley’s world class rapids. The festival will feature boat races, playboat competitions, live music, food vendors, beer and a massive whitewater marketplace including boats, boat accessories, and outdoor gear The Gauley Fest raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for American Whitewater to put the money towards improving and protecting the access of rivers nationwide .The action takes place in West Virginia’s Veterans Memorial State Park a typically quiet place that gladly makes room their annual September crowd. As this semester goes by, eventually students will start studying for tests. The Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) is open to everyone who needs peace and quiet to do homework, study, or tutoring. Shirley E. Arnold, the Director of the AEC has been here since 2002. She says how the “AEC provides a place for all Brevard College students to enrich their academic needs and offers an alternate place to study.” The AEC was first estabhshed in the spring of 2005, when it was decided to combine all the departments into one building. The AEC offers free tutoring for most department areas, and if there is a group who wants to study together all they have to do is reserve a room. It has been a huge help to many students continue by Ben Goff News Editor The yellow pennants flying from the roof of the dining hall this week are not festive decorations, but a safety measure to prevent workers from falling as they work to replace the roof According to Director of Food services John Crowe, the work will be going on for approximately a month, and will involve scraping off 30 years of roofing tar and replacing it with fresh material. Only a portion of the roof is being replaced; the raised roof over the main dining hall will not be replaced at this time, but will most likely be replaced in the near future. and a great place to get homework done. This year we welcome Tommasanne Lambert to the AEC staff. She previously interned here at Brevard College in the counseling center, and is now the Director of Career Exploration and Development.
