Palmer Audience disappointed by Ken Stein by Ben Goff News Editor Prominent Middle East scholar Dr. Ken Stein spoke to a large audience last Thursday evening about the Middle East. The content of his speech departed somewhat from the topic of “American foreign Policy after Iraq,” and those in attendance reacted with strong opinions. Stein’s lecture took what student Jason Martin describes as a “deconstructionist point of view,” which broke the Middle East situation apart but didn’t give any answers to the problems facing the region. Stein focused on the importance of understanding the history and culture of this region in order to create sound policy. He began his lecture discussing the history of western involvement in the Middle East since WWI and continued to address the importance of family systems and religious values in this culture. While it was clear to most in attendance that Stein possessed a vast knowledge and experience with the problems facing the Middle East, many expressed the opinion that he seemed reluctant to take a stand on any issue or address in depth the underlying causes of the current war in Iraq. As a follow up to the lecture a roundtable discussion was held with a panel consisting of students Jason Martin and Travis Wireback, professors Scott Sheffield and Ralph Hamlet, and former US. Ambassador Marshall McCallie. A Middle-Eastern man and a former US Marine who served on the ground in Iraq was also present, and broadened the discussion with their perspectives. All of the panelists acknowledged that the lecture was well informed and according to Hamlett, was “A call on each of us to make a difference in the world.” What's Inside? News .... ?
