Feb. 1, 2008 | The Clarion NEWS ^ Trivia Night at Square Root a big draw by Risa Dimond Managing Editor Prepare your mind for Monday morning and celebrate the end of a good weekend by getting a team of friends together to play trivia Sunday nights at The Square Root, a local restaurant and bar in downtown Brevard. You and your team compete with other teams through rounds of trivia questions and answers to win gift certificates to the Square Root. “Trivia is great,” says Spencer ‘Masterpiece’ Jones, trivia’s facilitator His hint on having a wiiming team is to have a team with a diverse age group. “It’s really useful for the questions that may be before the time of some players,” says Jones. Before the Square Root, Jones played trivia at The Mellow Mushroom in Asheville. He thought it would be a great idea to bring Trivia to Brevard so those who loved to play didn’t have to trek to the city. In Brevard, different hosts mn trivia and often each night is a different theme like movies or music. The games begin at 9pm, but why not go a little early for a bite to eat and some relaxing beverages to psych yourself up for the actual event. The Square Roots menu offers appetizers, sandwiches, and entrees as well as a full service bar The questions vary from intellectual to local geography to useless knowledge. Some examples include: What is the northern most island in Japan? What was the name of Fat Albert’s gang? What’s considered to be the banquet beer? Trivia helps expand your brain so you’re able to know little to nothing about everything. To begin playing, your team has to come up with a kick ass team name. Spencer will provide each team with a scorecard and scrap paper for answers. For each round, of questions, you are given choices for how many points you want your answers to be worth. You can only use each point choices once. You discuss the question with your team, write down the answer and bring your paper to Spencer to attain points for correct answers. There is a half time bonus round in which you don’t wager points for the multiple part question, each correct answer is worth 2 points with a possible total of 10 points. In the final bonus round, each team wagers somewhere between 0 to 20 points, like in final jeopardy, and it is the only time in the game a team can lose points. Each team’s points are tallied up after the final bonus round and the nights wiiming team is aimounced. First place winners receive a fifty-dollar gift certificate and in the past have received a sexy wresthngbelt that the team gets to decorate. First place wiimers are expected to return the following Sunday night to defend their championship title. The second place winning team receives a twenty-five dollar gift certificate. College students and locals Brevardians flock to this event. It is a great way to experience Brevard outside the walls of the college.
