Page 10 ARTS & LIFE The Clarion \ Feb. 8, 2008 Love according to Charlie Brown by BJ Wanlund Staff Writer All I know about boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, I learned from Charlie Brown. I know that the knowledge I have really isn’t much, but it is a sentiment that I have that I never got to share with Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, as he passed away in 2000. The biggest theme of love, Charlie Brown style, is unrequited love, as in Charlie Brown’s fruitless searching for the Little Red-Haired Girl (who actually shows her face in the special “It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown”), Lucy’s pursuit of Schroeder, and Sally’s pursuit of Linus Van Pelt (whom she calls her “ Sweet Babboo”). There’s a new DVD of “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown” from Warner Home Video that goes into this in a bit more detail in one of the special features, but unrequited love is definitely a big theme in most of the Peanuts television specials. Another theme is finally getting to that ultimate in love, only to be brought back down to Earth the next day. This theme is present in “It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown”, which I mentioned earlier and is also on the new “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown” DVD. Schulz brought a ton of romantic baggage to the table when creating Peanuts; for example, Lucy’s pursuit of Schroeder was borne out of Schulz’s frustrations about his first wife dragging him out West. It’s one of many insights into the comic strip Peanuts, and its creator, Charles M. Schulz, in the book “Schulz and Peanuts” by David Michaelis. Celebrity Gossip Poor Poor Britney! There’s no doubt that Britney Spears’ parents are horrified at how their daughter has been living as of late, and they’re finally doing something about it. Brit’s dad, Jamie Spears, went to an emergency court hearing yesterday and was granted temporary legal control over his daughter. What this means, specifically, is that Mr. Spears has authority to “prosecute any civil harassment restraining orders.” And according to court rep Allan Parachini, “There was a civil harassment restraining order issued against Sam Lutfi, but the specifics of that order are unknown.” It also means that Jamie will be allowed to restrict and limit visitors to the “Gimme More” singer, who is still hospitalized at the UCLA Medical Center. He is also permitted to use security guards to ensure her protection. In addition, Mr. Spears has access to all of Britney’s medical records, and finances, and has dominion over her home to change the locks, and clear out anyone who is living there. As you may have guessed, Sam Lutfi is not a happy camper He told press, “I object to this. Britney is fully capable of handling her own finances. Her doctors are capable of handling her health care. You’d think in a time like this, the family would be at the hospital taking care of their daughter, rather than fighting for her money. How sad.” Conveniently, he left out the part about how Jamie won’t let him see Britney. Britney Spears’ new lawyer, Adam Streisand, was spotted leaving Los Angeles Superior Court after being ejected for not having any evidence to support his claims. Adam, who is Barbara Streisand’s second cousin, is attempting to represent the 26- year-old Gimme More singer in her fight to have her father removed as conservator of her financial and medical matters. Nonetheless, “a court commissioner on Monday extended the control of Britney Spears’s father over the singer’s affairs, including her $40 million fortune.” Press reports tell: “Jamie Spears will remain co-conservator of his daughter’s estate until February I4th, the commissioner ruled, despite a lawyer’s claims Britney had a “strong desire” against her father’s temporary oversight.” 7776 Clarion Senior Staff Editor in Chief: Joseph Chilton Managing Editor: Risa Dimond News Editor: Open Copy Editor: Rhea Fredericl Business Editor: Amethyst Green Layout & Design: Travis Wirebacl Opinion Editor: l^andi Pearson Photo Editor: l^arc Newton Arts & Life Editor: Zacl Harding Business Manager: Emily Claris Sports Editor: John Lange Faculty Advisor: John B.
