by Joseph Chilton
Editor-in-Chief
Brevard College recently
established the Institute for
Women in Leadership and the
program will begin in the fall
of 2008.
Though the specifics of the
program are still being fine-
tuned, the program will
revolve around community
service, a communal living
situation with the other
members of the program, and

members’ academic
curriculum being geared
towards leadership.
“Much of this program is
just being fleshed out in terms
of overall themes of
leadership and service,” said
Vice President of Enrollment
Management Joretta Nelson.
According to Nelson, the
program was originally
intended to be just for
incoming students, but there
was so much interest among
students currently enrolled at
Brevard that the program has
expanded.
The institute will consist of
two groups- 15 new students
who will most likely live
together in
Beam Hall,
as well as
1 5
returning
students
who will
probably
live in one
of the
villages.
Incoming
students
who are
part of the
program
will be
required to
perform
ten hours a
week of
community
service.
Each
woman
will be paired with a local girl
from an area middle school
or high school and will serve
as a mentor in order to fulfill
the community service
requirements.
Returning students will have
different requirements for
community service, as they
will be required to perform a
group service project together
each semester.
The development of the
academic components of the
program are underway are
underway under the
leadership of Margaret
Brown, chair of the
Curricular Taskforce for
IWIL. The academic
components will be an
enrichment opportunity,
similar to the honors
program.
“We initially conceived this
as a co-curricular program,
with the hope that the
curricular elements would be
developed in the near future.
However, Dr. Brown and
other faculty have taken
strong leadership in working
toward more concrete plans
for the first year,” said
Nelson.
“Our faculty and staff
leadership here at Brevard
provide excellent role models
for the women of this
program.”
Applications are currently
being accepted for the
program. Nelson said that she
is expecting 45 applications
from incoming students. 25
current students have already
applied for the program.
New students will receive a
$5,000 scholarship for
participating in the program.
Returning students will
receive $2,000 annually.
According to Nelson, the
Institute for Women in
Leadership is one of several
strategies to help balance the
male to female ratio on
campus. Last fall, 53% of
Brevard College’s students
were men.
“We know that women have
a great chance for leadership
here on our campus, we just
have to get them to take a
look,” Nelson said.
