Controlling guns on campus starts with students

In the wake of a student being
arrested for possessing a gun
on campus, many studens have
beeged the question, "How do
we keep this kind of thing from
happening more often?"
The answer, according to
Director of Campus Security
Stan Jacobsen, is that
controlling guns on campus
starts with the students.
According to Jacobsen, the
school does not perform
searches for weapons, but that
Campus Security ends up
finding out about weapons
regardless.

According to
the North
Carolina Criminal
Law and
Procedures,
guns are not the
only weapon that
is illegal to have
on school
property.
The law states
that it is a class 1 misdemeanor
for any student to “possess or

Last Friday, February 22, the
Spiers Gallery
opened up a
new show
featuring works
by Steve
Loucks.
The display is
titled
“Embellished
Vessels with a
Personal
Touch,” and
contains many
works including
“Tea Boat (1)”
which aptly
looks like a cross
carry, whether
openly or
concealed, any
BB gun, stun
gun, air rifle, air
pistol, bowie
knife, blackjack,
metallic
knuckles, razor
blades, firework,
or any sharp-
pointed or
edged
instrument.”
Because of this
law, Jacobsen’s
office is home to
a collection of
Air Soft guns,
knives, and even a shngshot.
“I have been up until one or
between a floating boat and a
teapot. The combination of
these two images works
two in the morning at times
when I heard there was a
weapon on campus,” Jacobsen
said.
“If I hear that there is a
weapon on campus, especially
afirearm. I’ll hunt all night trying
to find it.
While Jacobsen admits that
most students who have
weapons on campus do not
intend to use them, there is too
much of a hability present for
Campus Security to take that
risk.
“If we find out and don’t do
anything about it we would be
accountable,” Jacobsen said.

Other highlights
include “Paella
Dish” and “Platter
with a White & Blue
Blush.” Both of
these pieces use the
vessel as a frame for
a somewhat abstract
landscape. The
effect of the
intermingling colors
creates an
impression of surreal
scenery.
The free show will
remain open until
March 14, so come
