Crimes of the Heart, a beautifully written
dark comedy, is sure to please a diverse
audience. The play, written by BethHenley,
won a Pulitzer-Prize in 1981 and is an Oscar
Award wiiming adapted screenplay.
Set in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, the three
estranged Magrath sisters Meg, Babe, and
Lenny
reunite after
the
youngest
sister Babe
shoots her
violent
husband.
Lenny, the
eldest sister
and turning
into an old
maid,
rounds up
Meg the
care-free
middle child
who fled to
Hollywood
and is now leaving her husband, to comfort
Babe.
After growing up in a dysfunctional
household, the three sisters begin to tackle
their bitter past as they deal with discordant
familial relationships, long-standing
problems with recurring consequences,
and their complicated present situations.
Each sister must face the tension, and come
to terms with the mistakes they have made
and accept the emotional and physical
costs of those faults.
Crimes of the Heart has won several Tony
Awards and Drama Desk Awards. The film
adaptation of the play was well received
and was performed by an all-star cast. The
movie itself was directed by Bruce
Beresford and was released in December
