Page Sports The Clarion August 29, 2008 New faces dominate volleyball roster by John Lange Sports Editor After losing four experienced seniors off of last year’s 16-15 squad, the Brevard College Volleyball team look to a roster in hopes of achieving similar success to last season. This year’s edition of the squad features 7 returning players and a sohd class of new Tornados. Among the key returning players are Brooke “The Beasf’ Seaman and Jami Perry. Seaman, a junior outside hitter from Spring Hill, Florida, was the team leader last season in both kills with 455 (4.14 per game) and blocks with 127 (1.15 per game). Seaman was also a pre-season All-South Atlantic Conference second team pick this year Perry, a senior setter hailing from Greer, South Carolina led last year’s squad in both assists with 1,124 (good for 10.22 per game) and aces with 44. Among the newcomers include several players with high levels of experience already. Caroline Merrill, a defensive specialist from Hendersonville, N.C. is a three-time state champion, and fellow defensive speciahst Lindsey Rogers was a 3 time all conference player at Hickory High School. Ashlie Morrison, a 5’9" middle hitter from Denver, Colorado was twice named All-City First-Team. The other new freshmen include Jordei Osby (Goldsboro, North Carolina), Chelsea Larsen (Greer, South Carolina), andKari Sims (Maryville, Teimessee). They are joined by junior college transfer Chelsey Trojan (Sacramento, California.) Head Coach Brenda Skeffmgton was very excited when this year’s recruiting class was aimounced. She said “This is the strongest recruiting class that I have had in my 24 years of coaching. With this class and eight exceptional returners, I look forward to this season.” The Tornados open the season on the road August 30* at the Montreat College tournament and a road match at Queens University (Charlotte, North Carolina) before opening up the home campaign. The home slate beings with the BC Tournament on September 5‘*' and 6* with matches against Coker College, Virginia Intermont College, and Columbia College. Other matches at home include the entirety of the South Atlantic Conference as well as Belmont Abbey and North Greenville.
