In front of a crowd of 2,208
on a steamy August evening,
the Brevard Tornados football
team opened up their third
season of the modem era with
a 28-0 loss to UNC Pembroke
at Brevard Memorial Stadium.
The game started slowly on
the offensive side with the
Braves having a drive stopped
by the Brevard defense giving
the Tornados the ball with 8:35
remaining in the opening
stanza.
Starting on their own 8 yard
line, the Tornados began
advancing up to their own 38
yard hne, but on the ensuing
play freshman wide receiver
Michael Grist (North Augusta,
GA) fumbled a screen pass and
it was recovered by a UNC
Pembroke player giving the
Braves excellent field position.
Seven plays and two minutes
fifty seconds later the score
was 6-OBraves on a 1-yard
touchdown run by running
kicker Taylor Baskett
converted the PA.T to make
the score 7-0.
In the second quarter BC
junior quarterback Kye
Hamilton (Charleston, SC) was
picked off by Caylon Hann and
Receiving the kickoff to open
the second half, Brevard was
trapped deep in their own
territory. Forced to punt after
only 3 plays, the Tornados
picked up a personal foul on
the punt, giving the Braves the
UNC Pembroke again had
excellent field position. The
Braves again capitalized with
Keimedy scoring on an 8-yard
run making the score 14-0.
On the ensuing possession,
Hann picked off Hamilton again
this time returning the ball to
the Tornados 8-yard line. Five
seconds later UNC Pembroke
was up 21-0 and that was all

ball on the Brevard 26-yard line.
Six plays later the score was
28-0. The rest of the game was
scoreless; thanks to a blocked
field goal by junior defensive
back Austin Williams
(Charlotte, NC).
While both teams put up
similar rushing yards (116 for
UNC Pembroke and 107 for
BC), the difference in the game
was through the air. UNC
Pembroke was 23 -3 5 on the day
good for 221 yards while the
Tornados only produced 65
yards on 19 attempts in the
passing game.
Head Coach Paul Hamilton
also expressed concern on the
team's personality on the
offensive side of the ball.
“Fm not sure we have an idea
of who we are and what we are
on offense. When the score got
to 28-0 it was pretty obvious
we were struggling. We’re
going to have to work to see if
we can have an offensive
football team that avoid
‘second and longs’ and ‘third
and longs.”
The Tornados return to
action this Saturday night at
home against Pikeville College
at home at 6 p.m.
Despite the early setback.
Coach Hamilton remains
optimistic for the remainder of
the 2008 campaign.
“We will work and leamfrom
this, and we’ll come back and
hopefully be the kind of
football team everyone expects
us to be,” Hamilton said.
