Page 2 News The Clarion \ Sept. 12, 2008 Mark your calendar's. Constitution Day is coming by John Moore Staff Writer Greetings Brevard College students, September 17 is approaching fast and you know what that means. Actually, there is a good chance that you don’t know so it looks as if it is up to me to tell you. It’s Constitution Day! Do not fear if you let it slip up on you this year, and to those who were unaware, that’s okay, because Constitution Day is a relatively new holiday. The Constitution Day observance was estabhshed in a section of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2005, Pubhc Law 108- 447. If you are wondering what that means do not feel bad, dear reader, I myself was unsure so I went straight to the source. Section 111 b. of Public Law 108-477 states “Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution.” What this means is that here at Brevard College we are not required to hold an educational program because Brevard College is a private school. This is actually quite a shame. Such a program would be very helpful to Brevard College students who only enjoy the protection of the rights specifically given to us by the college. Any student who attended school here last year certainly remembers the campus baimed, student published zine, “The Pupils Underground”. But I digress. For those of you on campus that would like to celebrate the founding of the “best and greatest free country on the planet”, I have taken the liberty of finding a few ways with which you can do so. The American Constitution Society is offering iCon, a download of the constitution that goes strait to your iPod at www.acslaw.org/iCon. The American Bar Association is offering a program called Conversations on the Constitution. The site describes it as “(A program) to encourage civil discussion and debate about the meaning of some of the Constitution’s concepts and clauses that have been the subject of ongoing constitutional debates.” You can find this information at www.abanet.org. Or just Google “Constitution Day”. I was very impressed with not only the number of resources but also the variety. Not only that but all of the programs that I found were free and easy to access. And of course, here at BC, the Debate Society is sponsoring a slew of activities that will allow you to celebrate your Constitution Day. I hope you will. Brevard alums reunite in Baglidad, Iraq by Emily Clark Business Manager When students graduate from Brevard College, what do they do, and do they ever meet their fellow classmates again. Due to the Alumni program, graduates can keep in touch with the college and even each other On July 23, 2008, Paul Heilman, BC class of ‘76 and Tim Barnhill, BC class of ‘77 had a Brevard College reunion in Baghdad, Iraq. Barnhill, a Major in the United States Marine Corp, is working in Habaniyah, Iraq and Paul is a Department of the Army Civilian working in Baghdad, Iraq. Paul was reading the Brevard Magazine, Mountain Currents, and saw the update from Tim in Class Notes about his assignment at Habaniyah. They made contact via email and made arrangements to have lunch in Baghdad. The two were track and field teammates thirty one years ago at BC with Tim on pole vault and Paul competing in high jump. The photos were taken at A1 Faw Palace in Baghdad, Iraq. In both pictures Heilman is on the left and Barnhill is on the right. The Brevard College Alumni Office serves 10,000 former BC students across both the nation and the world.
