Last year the signs were present in the
computer lab informing students that food,
drinks, and tobacco are forbidden in the labs.
However, those signs served as mere wall
decoration, as there was no enforcement of
those policies.
That is why junior Sam Carlisle was so
surprised last week when he was banished from
the Super Lab for a week for having an open
drink while using a computer
"This dude was just standing beside me not
saying anything. I wanted to be like, yo, do you
need help? But then he told me I needed to leave.
I was real surprised," Carlisle said.
"I really just wanted to finish my homework.
You mean to tell me that for 28 G's a year this
school can't afford waterproof computers?" he
added.
According to Information Technology director
Michael Fuiks, this was the second punishment
handed out this year because of violations of
computer lab rules.
The reason for the more stringent enforcement
of the rules this year is a combination of wanting
to protect the $30,000 worth of new computers
that were recently put in the Super Lab, as well
as the fact that some students have complained
about the environment of the lab,
“We’ve seen some pretty serious things going
on, and this year with all the new computer
equipment, we thought we should begin to
enforce the rules that were already in place,”
Fuiks said.
“We’ve been getting complaints about people
being abusive in there. We don’t just do this
capriciously. The lab is not a party room.”
Fuiks admitted, however, that it would be
hard to monitor the lab at all times. There are
