The Clarion September 19, 2008 Page 2 ^ ■ News — Student caught with gun appears in court by Joseph Chilton Editor in Chief Michael Frashure Coers, a 19- year-old student from Elkins, West Virginia appeared in court this past Tuesday after being arrested on Sept. 8 for possession of a gun on educational property. Coers was in possession of a 38- Smith and Wesson revolver with no ammunition. North Carolina State Law states that it is a Class I felony for any person to possess or carry any type of firearm on educational property. According to Dean of Students Chris Holland, who could not speak to Coers specific case due to FERPA, “a student that is found in possession of a weapon is generally suspended on an interim basis until all the facts are gathered and pending any potential court hearing.” Director of Campus Security Stan Jacobsen said he doubted that the student in question was a danger to other students, but that given the number of school shootings occurring in recent years, it would be irresponsible not to take every case seriously. “My heart goes out to this kid. but he should have read the law,” Jacobsen said. “When I find out that there is a gun on campus, the next thing I have to do is call the cops so that they can come deal with it. I am not even allowed to have a gun on campus, and I spent three and a half years in the Marines and 25 years with the FBI,” he added. This is the third instance of a gun being found on campus this calendar year One of the incidents involved a non-student and the other involved a student who was keeping a gun off campus but had brought it onto school property. One key to preventing such occurrences, according to Dean Elolland is to eliminate ignorance regarding state law. “While it is impossible to prevent someone from doing something, we have to be proactive in our education about what is allowed and what is not allowed while responding and dealing with situations appropriately as they occur,” Dean Elolland said. SGA BEAT The Student Government Association held the last meeting for the month of September. During this meeting, the SGA discussed club budgets, ideas for increasing awareness of SGA and club events around campus, and the election of Freshman officers as well as the Vice President spot on the Executive Board. Elections will wrap up today at dinner, and the winners will be annouced and sworn in at the first SGA meeting of October. As of now the candidates are Jamie Isserman and Chris Dixon for Executive Board Vice President, Nate Lyles and Dimitri McCloghry for Freshman President, Ryan Christie for Freshman Vice President, and Maddy Brodsky and Jen Nyman for Freshman Secretary.
