September 19,2008 | The Clarion Sports Page 5 Chowan comeback dooms BC Football by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor Despite career high yardage days by two receivers, numerous injuries and fatigue proved to be too much for the Brevard Tornados, as they surrendered a 20-3 lead in the second half on a steamy day in Murfreesboro, NC. Chowan able to fight back and win by a final score of 23-20. “During the game we lost 4 or 5 [players] at least, and it’s a hard time for us because we are not a deep team” commented head coach Paul Hamilton. “I feel for the kids and the coaches because we are so depleted as a squad, that the kids are fighting with everything they got but we just ran out of gas.” On the first possession of the game junior quarterback Kye Hamilton hooked up with fellow junior Donald Hudson for a 63- yard pass that led to the first touchdown of the game a couple of plays later. Hamilton later connected for touchdown passes of 6 and 56 yards, which led to the 20-3 lead. In the last 20 minutes of the game Chowan began to chip into the Tornado lead. Finally with 8:05 remaining, the Hawks scored on a 26-yard passing play. Despite having two more opportunities on offense, the Tornados were unable to score again. Unfortunately time ran out for the Tornados and the Hawks had their first win against an NCAA D-II opponent since they moved up to the division in 2005. Running back John Taylor rushed for 33 yards on 7 carries before leaving the game in the third quarter with a rib injury. Hamilton went28-of-53 with three touchdowns and a BC record 297 yards through the air Junior wide receiver Donald Hudson caught 9 balls for 128 yards on the afternoon while junior slot back Shaton Pratt caught 4 passes for 101 yards. The Tornados have the week off this week before returning to action on Sept. 27 in their first official South Atlantic Conference game. The family weekend game is against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears and kicks off at 2 p.m. Volleyball splits 4 games in grueling 5-day stretch by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor Photo by M. Newton Brevard College volleyball players celebrate after coming back from 2 sets down to defeat visiting Belmont- Abbey College In 5 games on Sept. 11. After taking second place in their own tournament back on September 6th, the Brevard College volleyball team began a string on four matches in five days. These matches included a thrilling five set win over Belmont Abbey, a tri-match at Southern Wesleyan and the squad's first ever South Athletic Conference match at Carson-Newman. Last Thursday, the Tornados started off slowly dropping the first two sets to Belmont-Abbey by identical scores of 25-23. However, the third set was the beginning of what could be called the comeback of the year in this still young season. In the third set the Tornados took an early 12-4 lead and never looked back as they won the third set 25-15. In the fourth, the Crusaders hung tough but still fell to BC 25-23. In the fifth it was a back and forth affair. After being tied at 10-10 the Tornados took the next 5 points to win the match. The final score for the match was 23-25,23-25,25-15, 25-22 and 15-10. The offense was again led by junior Brooke “The Beast” Seaman who recorded 26 kills on the night. Senior Jami Perry had 41 assists to go with 6 kills. Two days later the Tornados travelled to Central, South Carolina to take part in a tri match at Southern Wesleyan. In the first match of the day against North Greenville University the Tornados took out the Crusaders in four sets by a score of 25-20, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-21. In the second match of the afternoon the hosting Warriors were able to overcome the Tornados. In another four set match the score was 25-20, 17-25, 26-28 and 19- 25. Seaman continued her hot hand by putting away 42 kills on the day, while freshman Chelsea Larsen slammed 29 kills over the course of the afternoon. On Tuesday night the Tornados travelled over the mountains to the west for their first ever South Atlantic Conference match against Carson-Newman. Starting off fast the Tornados won the first set. but Carson-Newman was able to equalize and win the next two sets to take the match 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-18. This Saturday the Tornados are returning to Tennessee to take on Lincoln Memorial, before returning home next Tuesday to take on SAC rival Mars Hill.
