The Clarion September 26, 2008 Sports Volleyball team earns BC's first ever SAC victory by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor Tuesday September 23rd is a date that will go down in history on the Brevard College campus. On that night, the Brevard College volleyball team picked up the first ever South Atlantic Conference victory for the Tornado athletic department. Taking on arch-rival Mars Hill, the Tornados won in straight sets 25-19,25-22 and25-23, improving to 8-5 on the year, and 1-2 in conference action. The Mars Hill Lions dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference. In the first set after swapping points in the early. Mars Hill went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-6 lead forcing a Brevard timeout. Following the time out, Brevard went on a streak to even up the score at 14-14, and then ran off three points to take a 17-14 lead. After trading points, BC went on a tear and an ace by sophomore libero Rebecca Schoonover closed out the first set 25-19. The second set was another back and forth affair, with neither team taking more than a two point lead at any point until set point. With the score tied at 21, junior middle hitter Brooke “The Beasf ’ Seaman slammed the ball to the floor, giving the Tornados a lead they would not release. Another Seaman kill finished off the second set 25-22 in favor of the home squad. In the third set, the Lions jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Refusing to give in, the Tornados bounced back to tie it up at 15 on an ace by junior outside hitter Chelsey Trojan. With the set knotted up again at 23, Trojan came up with a massively important kill and on match point senior setter Jami Perry ripped an ace that gave the Tornados the set 25-23 and the match three sets to zero her second of the night. “I always take a sigh of relief when it’s the end of the game and Jami goes back to serve,” commented BC head coach Brenda Skeffington. “There’s no better feeling than Jami serving for game point.” For the night Trojan led the Tornados with 17 kills and in digs with 17 as well. Seaman contributed with 12 kills and two aces on the night, while freshman outside hitter Chelsea Larsen slammed seven kills. Junior Megan Street in her first start of the year hit an impressive .571 kill percentage with four kills on seven attempts. Starting on Friday the Tornados begin a 4 game road stand with a conference match at Newberry. The next home action is on Friday October 10th, with a SAC match against Catawba. Carnie takes 2"^ place at Weber Fall Invitational by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor After winning their season opening tournament at Glen Cannon on September 15th, the Brevard college men’s team looked to continue their winning ways in the Webber Fall Invitational in Babson Park, Florida. In the three round tournament, the Tornados carded a 39-over par 903, 24 shots behind champion Brevard Community College (Florida), good for 10th place. Junior Grant Carnie (Elton, Scotland) shot a 2-under 214, which was good for a tie for the lead. Carnie however lost the playoff to Webber’s Craig Isabel. Freshman Joshua Davis (Old Fort, North Carolina), who won the season opening Glenn Cannon Invitational finished tied for 14th with a score of 5-over par 221. Brevard also fielded a “B” team in the tournament which finished in 19th place with a 164-over par score of 1,028. Next up on the schedule for the Tornados is the Clayton State Invitational on September 29th and 30th in Hampton Georgia. Junior Grant Carnie
