by Katie Kelleher Contributor “It’s one of the great, untold American stories. And it wasn’t that long ago,” recounts acclaimed actress Hillary Swank in regards to the subject of the movie Iron Jawed Angels, in which she stars alongside an equally shining cast that includes such names as Patrick Dempsey, Brooke Smith, and Molly Parker “(It’s) not necessarily about a certain era as much as a conviction of heart and what is right and what is just. That’s something that we can all relate to.” Iron Jawed Angels relays a message that transcends time. It is the true story of the struggle of American women suffragists who made huge sacrifices and fought for that in which they strongly believed: equality, respect, and the opportunity to have a voice in an otherwise democratically corrupt society. The adversities and lives of these radically winged activists who had the courage to defy the traditions and the establishment to secure the passing of the 19th Amendment and women’s right to vote in this country represent an incredible inspiration and give testament to the importance of exercising that very freedom for which they so valiantly fought. Brevard College’s Institute for Women in Leadership, along with the Student Activities, will be hosting an open campus screening of Iron Jawed Angels at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 6th, in Dunham Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to come experience this powerful movie, which will be followed by an optional and open panel discussion for any who wish to discuss the issues raised in the context of the film. For any students who have not yet registered to vote, registration will still be taking place every day on the Academic Quad from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and then in Myers Dining Hall from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. through October 10th, the registration deadline.
