October 10, 2008 | The Clarion — Sports Wingate Bulldogs bite Tornados Page 5 #18 Wingate stays perfect with 44-13 win by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor Last Saturday night, #18 in the nation, Wingate University, came to Brevard and showed why they were ranked so highly, defeating the Tornados 44-13. The Bulldogs took a lead with 6:48 remaining in the first quarter and never relinquished it the rest of the evening. The loss drops the Tornados to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference The score was 20-0, in favor of Wingate, when junior running back Tyrone Arrington was able to scoot past the Bulldog defense for a 40 yard touchdown run. The ensuing P.A.T was successful and that closed out the scoring for the first half with the Tornados trailing by a score of 20-7. In the second half however, the Bulldogs kept the hammer down and were able to pull away from the Tornados. Finally, after a 15 play, 73-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, wide receiver Donald Hudson closed out the scoring with a 2 yard TD. run to make the final score 44-13. For the evening Arrington ran 12 times for 73yards and one touchdown and Shaton Pratt gained 29 yards on only 3 carries. In his first collegiate start junior quarterback Matthew Gaines went 3-8 passing for 23 yards in a game where the offensive scheme was changed from that seen in previous weeks. On the defensive side of the ball, freshman linebacker Andrew Barrentine had 14 tackles on the night while freshman comerback Chase Waldo had 13 tackles. Freshman safety Michael Gist and junior linebacker Stanley Jones chipped in with 11 tackles each. Senior punter Luke Lovelace also had an exceptional game, punting 6 times for 252 yards, angling those punts away from the dangerous returners of the Bulldogs. Despite the recent setbacks. the outlook is not completely bleak in the mind of Coach Paul Hamilton. “We came out and we fought and battled, and put ourselves in positions to make the score even closer. We’ve played 25 football games in the history of our program, and that program over there (Wingate) has been doing this for a long long time” said Coach Hamilton, “...if we keep pressing on we’ve got a shot.” The Tornados return to action this Saturday at Tusculum College at 1:30 p.m. They return home October 25th for the annual Homecoming game against Carson-Newman College on October 25th at 2 p.m. BC volleyball improves record to 9-7 by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor After nearly a week off, the Brevard College women’s volleyball team returned to action last Saturday at Converse College. Looking to rebound after some adversity suffered the previous weekend; the Tornados “exorcised those demons” defeating the Valkyries in straight sets 25-17, 25-19 and 25-16. The first set never saw the Tornados trail, and they made short work of Converse winning 25-17. The second set was much tighter in the early parts, until senior captain Jami Perry stepped back to serve. A 6-0 run gave the Tornados a lead they would not relinquish as set two went to Brevard 25-19. In the third set, it was all Tornados, starting off on a 10-1 run. On match point freshman Ashlie Morrison slammed the ball to the court off an assist from freshman Chelsea Larsen and the Tornados took the final set 25-16. The Tornados were led on offense again by Brooke “The Beast” Seaman who had 14 kills on the afternoon and recorded an impressive hitting percentage of .43. Perry picked up 23 assists on the match along with 11 digs, which tied her for the team high with junior Chelsey Trojan. The win improved the Tornados to 9-7 on the season. The by IVI.A.
