Page 6 Arts & Life The Clarion October 17, 2008 The show must go on: Porter Center looking to set plans for 09-10 by Jason Decristefaro Arts & Life Editor Since its inauguration in 1998, the Porter Center for Performing Arts has become an integral part of Brevard College. Earher this semester, however, an email was sent out that seems to have caused a great deal of confusion regarding the future of the Porter Center 1 decided to have a meeting with Porter Center technical director Rick Nelson and Managing Director Beth Abrams to see if 1 could have some questions answered. The first thing 1 was curious to know was whether or not the Porter Center would continue to function as a venue for the performing arts. Both Rick and Beth confirmed that there will indeed be a concert season for the 2009 - 10 academic year Unlike previous years, however, the students, faculty, and community of the city of Brevard will be able to have input regarding what artists perform at the Porter Center (see end of this article for further details). Rick Nelson representatives of the student and faculty body to voice their opinions regarding how the informed me that he felt the Porter Center is, “a community venue,” and that it would best serve its function in supporting the interests of the college and city community. Secondly, 1 wanted to see what the Porter Center was doing to learn about the community’s interests. Since the start of this semester, a Porter Center committee has been estabhshed that will allow Porter Center facilities could best be utihzed. Rick, however, was quick to realize that the opinions of a select few, no matter how prestigious and/or representative these few are, cannot possibly speak for the opinions and interests of the entire campus. For this reason, the Clarion and Porter Center staff has developed the poll below to determine what you, a member of the campus community, would like to see at the Porter Center. More often than not, 1 hear students complain about how little there is to do on campus. By taking less than a minute to answer the poll below, you can change this for the better If this isn’t incentive enough, the Porter Center and Clarion staff will be randomly selecting 10 students and/or faculty to receive a prize of a complimentary ticket to a Porter Center Concert Series show. Students: 1) What genre of music would you like to see performed at the Porter Center? 2) What non-musical acts (i.e. comedians, acting troupes, etc.), would you like to see at the Porter Center? 3) Are there are any artists (local or national), that you would like to see perform at the Porter Center? 1 1 /Tn-a,n! r/V\^ TX. /jSFoirJ v-ihep, v-4 1.jiSor v-'r, Ttol: + Preg'ficL¥\t7 Soared/? 885-7886 or 1-800-395'hetp wwvi^.br«(/ardwom«rt$c«rii|ercoin
