BORED IN Brevard?
BC Students weigh in on the best ways to pass the time in Brevard
by Gretchen Allie
Staff Writer
After talking to 56 students about
Brevard College and the town; nearly half
think it’s boring here. Brevard College
is surrounded by the mountains, and is
less than 5 minutes from Pisgah National
Forest. Brevard has activities and athletic
events going on all the time. Asheville, a
thriving city, is only thirty minutes up the
road. So, what’s the problem?
Students complained about the lack of
activities on campus and aroimd the town.
Jonathan DeCock, a BC freshman, said
“the school and the town are too small,
and I think that because of that there isn’t
much to do.” Students who are bored
with Brevard said that they generally hang
around campus all day, bored, watching
TV or just walking around.
Those who think Brevard is a fun place
said that there are plenty of things to do on
campus; students mentioned various BC
clubs, sports, and
hanging out in general. Marcus Roberson
said “there are too many clubs to join and
people to hang out with to be boring.”
Caitlin Hubbard, a BC freshman, said
that “only boring people make Brevard
boring.” The best way to avoid being
bored in Brevard is to get out and do
something. But what exactly is there to
do in Brevard? BC students answer this
question by giving:
The Top Five Favorite Things
to Do In and Around Brevard
#5 Foam Dance Party
A Foam Dance Party was held twice last
year, once in the fall and once in the spring.
The first Foam Dance Party of this year
was held during Homecoming weekend.
Several students mentioned that it was the
best thing BC has hosted all year
#4 Kings Creek
BC Students said they spend a lot of
their time at King Creek, whether they are
studying, wading, hanging out, or even
streaking. So grab your homework, swim
suit, and some friends and head to Kings
Creek.
#3 Partying
Students on Brevard campus know how to
throw parties- often informal but plaimed.
Parties bring students together in a fun way.
And no one loves anything better than a
good party; that’s why partying makes
number 3.
#2 Pisgali National Forest
One of the favorite things to do was go
to Pisgah Forest. Many students say that
they go there to hike, ride bikes, visit
the waterfalls, and swim. Pisgah Forest
provides all kinds of fun and is 10 minutes
down the road.
#1 Turtlebacl Falls
Student after student mentioned Turtleback
Falls as one of their favorite things to do.
Turtleback is about a 45 minute drive to
Jackson County off of Highway 281, and
a mile-long hike, but well worth the time
spent getting there. All the students who
talked about it said that it is awesome fun
and way better than Shding Rock.
Remember, the Top Five isn’t all there is
to do. Chelsea Freeman, a freshman, said
“You have to find the fun in everything.”
So keep your eyes open, get off your bum,
and go have some fun.
