Sports — Men's basketball improves to 4-1 The Clarion | December 5, 2008 by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor After suffering their tirst defeat of the season to Belmont-Abbey on Saturday in the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, the Brevard College men’s basketball team was able to bounce back and improve their record to 4-1. After the Belmont Abbey loss, the Tornados travelled to Warren Wilson and were able to beat their regional foe by thirty. On Nov. 29, the Tornados travelled to the home of the Charlotte Bobcats to take on Belmont Abbey. BC was cold during the tirst half, only shooting 24% from the tield and went into the intermission down 28-19. While the shooting improved in the second half, the Crusaders were able to hold on to their lead and went on to win 60-42. Junior Jonathan Whitson led the Tornados in scoring with 13 points. On Monday, the Tornados travelled to Swannanoa, North Carolina for a rematch with Warren Wilson, whom the Tornados defeated 13 days earlier by 28 points. The Tornados led 40-25 at the intermission. In the second half, the Tornados continued to pull away, leading by 32 at one point while cruising to a 76-46 win, completing the season sweep over the Fighting Owls. Leading the scoring for Brevard was senior Joseph Chilton who put in 17 points on the evening. Juniors Sam Carhsle sauced the Owls, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards, while Whitson also picked up a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Tornados return to the court this Saturday opening up South Atlantic Conference play against Tusculum College. Women's basketball picks up first wins of season by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor After picking up their first couple wins of the new season, the Brevard College women’s basketball team looks forward to opening up their conference season this Saturday at Tusculum. Abusy Thanksgiving week saw the Tornados dispatch of both Virginia Intermont and Converse College to improve their season record to 2-3. On November, 25th, the Tornados opened up their home campaign against NAIA. foe Virginia Intermont. Despite trailing 15-12 10 minutes into the game, B.C. went on a 27-14 run to enter the half with a 39-29 lead. In the second half, the Tornados continued to expand on their lead and finished off with a 79-58 win against the Cobras. Five Brevard players were able to score in double figures led by junior Samantha Wiim’s 15 points. Freshmen Kelly Hudler and Aima Schlobohm along with sophomore Amanda Whitaker each put in 12, and freshman Holli Flippo contributed with 10 points. Last Saturday (November 28th), the Tornados returned from their short Thanksgiving break to welcome the Converse Valkyries to Boshamer Gymnasium. After falhng behind early, the Tornados went on a 12-0 run that led to a halftime score of 47-33 in favor of Brevard. In the second half the Tornados continued their hot shooting from behind the arc, led by sophomore Amber Roberts, who put in II of the teams first 12 points. Roberts finished the game with a career high 25 points along with 7 assists while shooting 5-10 from behind the 3 point line, as the Tornados won 98-83. Sophomore Whitaker was able to score 19 points to go with her 14 rebounds, and freshman Flippo put 15 points in. Junior Samantha Wiim also contributed with 12 points. This weekend the Tornados start off their South Atlantic Conference season off with a bang against # 14 in the nation Tusculum. The game tips off at 2 p.m. and can be heard on www.bctomados.com or WSQL 1240 AM.
