The Clarion | January 23, 2009 Sports — Men's Basketball picks up 2 SAC wins by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor As the year changed, the Brevard College men’s basketball team continued with their games, and showing the tenacity that will make them a force to be reckoned with this year in their inaugural South Atlantic Conference campaign. Before exams, the Tornados travelled to Greeneville, Teimessee to play their first S.A.C. game against Tusculum College. Despite leading by only four at the half, the Pioneers used a 32-19 second half to pull out a 65-48 win. It would be 23 days before the Tornados would get a shot at redemption, taking part in the Marietta College tournament in Marietta, Ohio. After winning their opening match 89-73 Emory and Henry, B.C. fell in the championship match to the hosts 76-72. The Tornados kicked off the New Year with a conference clash with arch-rival Mars Hill on January 3rd. Junior Jonathan Whitson led his teammates with 28 points and 12 rebounds, and along with three other teammates who scored in double figures, B.C. was able to win their first ever conference game 90-80. Two nights later, the Tornados were able to defeat Montreat 96-90 in overtime. Following two losses to conference foes Lenoir-Rhyne and Lincoln Memorial, the Tornados were able to get back on track with a second victory over Erskine 70- 66. In this win the Tornados were led by double-doubles from Whitson and Sam “Sauce” Carlisle. Two nights later, the Tornados faced off with #14 Catawba. Despite 25 points from Whitson, Catawba was able to escape from Boshamer Gymnasium with 76-73 win. Seaman before the start of their 59-56 home 17. able to pull out a 59-56 win despite being down by a point with under a minute to go in the game. Whitson, who led all scorers with 18 points to go along with a game high 10 rebounds, was able to clinch the victory with two free throws after junior Nathan Whitmire gave B.C. the lead with two free throws with 54 seconds remaining. The win improves the Tornados record to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the SAC. The Tornados returned to action Wednes day night against conference foe Carson- Newman before travelling to North Green ville fora non-conference matchup on Sat urday. They return home next Wednesday January 28th to challenge conference rival Newberry at 8 p.m. Lady Tornados pick up 2 wins over break by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor While the vast majority of Brevard Col lege students were able to kick back and enjoy their Christmas Break, the women’s basketball team continued on with their season over the hohdays. Highlights over the holiday include non-conference wins against Virginia Intermont and Montreat and the opening of their inaugural cam paign in the South Atlantic Conference. However, before final exams even began, the Tornados played their first S.A.C. game ever when they visited Tusculum College in Greeneville, Teimessee. Against the #14 ranked Pioneers, the Tornados were outscored 58-6 in the paint and lost by a final score of 98-57. Following the S.A.C. openerthe Tornados took 12 days off for final exams before re turning for one game at Limestone, which they dropped 74-64. With another 12 days off before the next game the team was well rested for a rematch with Virginia Inter mont, whom they defeated by 20 points a month earlier at home. The Tornados came out of the blocks quick, jumping to a 26-5 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and held a 35-24 lead at the intermission. In the second half the Cobras were able to close the gap to 7, but some clutch free throws down the stretched allowed the Tornados to leave Bristol, Virginia with a key win. B.C. was led in scoring by sophomore Amanda Whitaker with 15 points. Freshman Anna Schlobohm put in 12 points and junior Millie Wharton chipped in with II points. On January 3rd, the Tornados hosted Mars Hill College and dropped a 63-46 decision, but were able to rebound from that confer ence loss with a victory over Montreat on January 5th. Whittaker again led the Torna dos with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Samantha Wiim chipped in with 13 points and a game high II rebounds. The following weeks have not been kind to the Tornados as they have dropped deci sions to Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial, Erskine, Catawba and Wingate. The Torna dos currently stand at 4-11 on the year and 0-6 in the S.A.C. as they travelled to confer ence foe Carson-Newman on Wednesday night before hitting the road again for a non-conference matchup with North Green ville College on Saturday. The Tornados return home on January 28th to take on Conference rival Newberry at 6 p.m.
