The Clarion | January 30, 2009 Hoops — Tornados' defense sparks rout of NGU by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Staff Writer Coming off of a difficult seven point loss at South At lantic Conference rival Carson- Newman three nights earlier, the Brevard College men’s basketball team traveled to Tigerville, SC on Saturday afternoon looking to build a little momentum. The Torna dos wasted no time making a statement in this matchup with the Crusaders, dominating early and holding on to a 66- 44 victory. The Tornados went on a 12-0 run to kick off the game, hold ing the Crusaders scoreless until 5 minutes in. The smoth ering B.C. defense did not give up a field goal until 10:41 was left in the first half. The half ended with a 17-5 Brevard run making the score 37-14 at the intermission. In the second half. North Greenville was able to close the gap to within 20 points late in the game the Tornados were able to hold on for a size able win. The B.C. field goal defense (1st in the S.A.C. and 8th overall in N.C.A.A. divi sion II) were able to hold the Crusaders to 27.3% from the floor en route to the win. Junior Jonathan Whitson led the Tornados in scoring again with 14 points. His classmates Nathan Whitmire, Shane Gal loway and Darin Dellinger chipped in with 13, 12 and eleven points respectively. The win improves the B.C. record 10-7 overall on the season. Lady Tornados snap six game skid Four BCplayers reach double figures In win over North Greenville by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Staff Writer Riding a season-long six game losing streak, the Brevard College women’s basketball travelled to Tigerville, S.C. on Saturday to take on North Greenvflle. The game was a spirited affair, with the lead going back and forth between two teams several times before Brevard prevailed 81-76. In the first half the Crusaders went on a couple early runs to give them a 21-14 lead with 10:50 remaining in the first stanza. Thanks to exceptional three-point shooting though, the Tornados were able to stay in the matchup and at the in termission the game was tied at 43 apiece. In the second half the Torna dos began to pull away, taking a 10pointleadwith6:27 remain ing in the game. The Crusaders were able to puU back within two points with five minutes left, but the Tornados showed a patience and maturity on offense that allowed them to find open shots to close out the win. Junior Samantha Wiim again led her team in scoring putting in 21 points. Other leading scorers were sophomore Aman da Whitaker with 16, freshman Aima Schlobohm with 15 and freshman Holli Flippo chipped in with 12.
