Page 6 The Clarion \ February 13, 2009 Baseball sweeps weekend series with Ohio Valley by Johnny “Stats” Lange Sports Editor After their scheduled season opening double-header against Milligan College was cancelled due to the threat of snow, the baseball team opened the 2009 season with a three-game sweep of Ohio Valley University. In the first game of the Saturday double- header, the Tornados put two runs across the plate in the first inning and added another in the second. A leadoff homerun in the top of the third helped the Fighting Scots cut the lead to 3-1. In the fifth iiming however, the Tornados were able to rough up the Ohio Valley starter for three more runs and added an extra tally in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring for the afternoon with the B.C. winning 7-1. Freshman Matthew Pruitt started off his collegiate career by going 3-3 with two mns scored on the day while senior Brice War ner and sophomore Stephen Mullis each went 2-3. Senior Ryan Toney picked up the win, pitching five innings while giving up only one run. Junior Tommy Yearty shut the door by pitching two scoreless iimings. In game two of the afternoon, senior Seth Laughter threw a one-hit complete game, striking out two as the Tornados won 3-0. Juniors William Scholer and Jason Merrill each went 2-3 in the win, while Mullis broke the game open with a two-run triple in the bottom of the third.. On Sunday afternoon, junior Shane Gal loway, fresh off a game with the men’s basketball team, took the mound in his first appearance of the year Giving up two mns over five iimings, Galloway picked up his first win of the year, striking out six while walking none in a 14-6 Brevard rout. Offensively on the afternoon, Pruitt went 3-4 and Warner went 2-5 with both play ers scoring two runs. Junior Jackie Com opened up the offensive onslaught with a two-run home run in the fifth inning and MuUis capped back-to-back six-run frames with a two-run shot in the sixth. The Tornados continue their season- opening homestand this weekend against Mercyhurst College. The action begins with a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a nine-iiming game on Sunday. First pitch on both days is at noon. Tornados defend home court from Crusaders by Johnny “Stats” Lange Sports Editor Wednesday night was a night of career- highs as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams completed season sweeps against North Greenville University. In the men’s game, junior Jonathan Whit son set the all-time Brevard College scoring record as well as a career high in points as the Tornados defeated the Crusaders 78-62. Whitson put in 33 points on the night as he surpassed Tyjuan Campbell, who had scored 1,356 points in his career Junior Cody Siniard chipped in with II points and classmate Darin Dellinger dished out a career-best ten assists. In the women’s game, junior Samantha Wiim scored 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds leading the Tornados to an 82-62 rout of the Crusaders. Freshman HoUi Flippo scored 13 and classmates Anna Schlobohm and Kelly Hudler chipped with eight points apiece.
