Page 2 Sports The Clarion \ March 6, 2009 Weather ruins Tornados' weekend by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor Due to the rain and snow last week, the Brevard College spring sports teams were among the most affected. Baseball, softball, teimis and men’s golf were the teams that had events delayed or postponed. Baseball was scheduled to take on South Atlantic Confer ence rival Mars Hill this last weekend, but rain postponed the double-header on Saturday and Sunday. The snow that fell on by BJ Wanlund Definitely has game Writing the column last week on old video games really tired up my retro juices, and remind ed me of several great stories from my gaming past that I feel the need to share with you. This will detinitely be at least two columns long, so this week is console stories only!!!!!!! The tirst story is one that prob ably very few of us who played games back when we were kids ever came into contact with. I had this friend in Michigan named Blake. Blake was a really nice guy I met (no joke) Sunday caused the series to be postponed. It will be made up at a date to be determined. Softball was scheduled to take part the Mid-South Classic in Simpsonville, South Carolina, but the threat of rains falhng all weekend caused the tournament to be cancelled. The team also had a double-header scheduled with Louisburg College for this Thursday, but this has been can celled due to both teams having to make up games. Instead the Tornados will take on Belmont Abbey College on Thursday at on CompuServe, and yes, that totally carbon-dates me. The fuimy thing was that Blake lived in Michigan. Apparently, Michigan has really good flea markets, because he not only had a top-loader NES, he also had a strange NES cartridge I’ve never seen anywhere before or since, which was an NES multicart (or a flash cartridge) of sorts. He had all kinds of dif ferent NES games on that thing, including a few Famicom (or Family Computer) games like Zippy Race, which was basi cally a bike racing game. Boy, those were good times. And I have another NES- related story from that time frame. Blake had an older brother named Adam, and they both, along with their mother, had come to the house in Ra leigh that we were living in at that time. I can’t remember who it was now who asked me if he could play my The Little Mermaid NES game (whether it was Blake or Adam I caimot recafl forthelifeofme). A little while 2 p.m. The men’s golf team had their season opening event cancelled at Salisbury and the event wfll not be made up. The Tornados now have their season opening tournament at the Tusculum Men’s Invitational this Saturday in Greeneville, Teimessee. Finally, the men’s and wom en’s tennis teams were supposed to be in action against Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carohna on Saturday but this match was also not destined to happen. later, the guy who asked me was at the one point I hadn’t gotten to at that point, and unbeliev ably I still haven’t gotten to, which was the Ursula battle at the end of the game!! They beat a game I owned! Aargh! My final story is also a Ninten do story, but it is actually a later Nintendo console, and explains why I keep my N64 in a place where I could very easily hook it up. I had started to become more of a console gamer at this point. I didn’t like the idea (for whatever reason) of keeping up with the Joneses just to play the very latest PC games, and I had bought an N64 to play games like Mario Party 2. Now, I used to kick the rear end of any and all comers who would be so nuts as to challenge me at Mario Party 2. And some times, like if friends were over (once they got the hang of the game). I’d intentionally take the train in the Western Land board in order to send my unsuspect ing opponents back to the start! I’m quite the ruthless guy when it comes to videogames, so I Bye Bye Brevard basketball by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor The Brevard College men’s and women’s basketbafl teams finished up their seasons this last Saturday taking on the Catawba Coflege Indians in South Atlan tic Conference action. Both the men’s and the women’s squads ended up losing by 10 points to end the 2008-2009 campaign. The women’s team held a 34- 33 lead at the intermission, but was outscored 34-23 while only shooting 22.6% from the floor in the second half to lose 67-57. Junior Samantha Winn again led the team in scoring with 23 points. Sophomore Amanda Whitaker chipped in with 13 points and led the team in re bounds with nine while sopho more Amber Roberts contributed with eight points. The Tornados finished the season 6-21 overafl and 0-16 in the SAC. The men’s team entered into Saturday’s competition tied for eighth place in the SAC with Carson-Newman. Led by ju niors Cody Siniard (19 points), Darin Deflinger (14 points) and Shane Gafloway (12 points,) the Tornados hung tight with the Indians all night long, but were not able to close the gap below six points in the second half When the final horn sounded the Tornados lost 90-80 and were forced into the role of scoreboard watching. Just 20 minutes later the news came that Carson-Newman had won and claimed the final spot in the conference tournament. The Tornados finished the season 12- 15 overafl and 3-13 in the SAC Game/story corner with the Beej
