SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE Volume 74, Issue 21 COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 March 20, 2009 Shinohara takes the reins of women's soccer program by Gretchen Allie Staff Writer Brevard College Athletic Department recently hired Shigeyoshi Shinohara as the new Women’s Soccer Coach. After Liz Stojetz was let go in November, the search for a new coach began. Shino hara, who goes by Coach Sugar, was hired in February. His first official day at Brevard was March 16. Sugar found Brevard College through 2008 Tornado Hall of Fame inductee for Exceptional Coaching Joe Bartlinski. Sugar said that he was interested in Brevard College because he thought that the “school Shigeyoshi Shinohara will be a challenge”. Sugar has come to Brevard from the Uni versity of Montevallo, which is a Division II school in Alabama. There, he was the assistant coach for four seasons since 2005. Before Montevallo, Sugar was a part of the United Soccer Academy located in New Jersey, where he was a full-time coach. The BC Women’s Soccer team is very excited to have Sugar as the new head coach. “I’m ready for his fresh ideas,” Freshman Bailey Varley said. Kelly Harris, a junior, said she was excited about Sugar because “he’s eager to better himself as a coach”. The team is currently in their non-cham- pionship season, where they have time to prepare for the fall. Sugar said that what excites him most about coaching at Brevard is that “the players here are so wilhng to go to another level. " In this issue...
