Shinohara takes the reins of
women's soccer program
by Gretchen Allie
Staff Writer
Brevard College Athletic Department
recently hired Shigeyoshi Shinohara as the
new Women’s Soccer Coach.
After Liz Stojetz was let go in November,
the search for a new coach began. Shino
hara, who goes by Coach Sugar, was hired
in February. His first official day at Brevard
was March 16.
Sugar found Brevard College through
2008 Tornado Hall of Fame inductee for
Exceptional Coaching Joe Bartlinski.
Sugar said that he was interested in Brevard
College because he thought that the “school
Shigeyoshi Shinohara
will be a challenge”.
Sugar has come to Brevard from the Uni
versity of Montevallo, which is a Division
II school in Alabama. There, he was the
assistant coach for four seasons since 2005.
Before Montevallo, Sugar was a part of the
United Soccer Academy located in New
Jersey, where he was a full-time coach.
The BC Women’s Soccer team is very
excited to have Sugar as the new head
coach.
“I’m ready for his fresh ideas,” Freshman
Bailey Varley said. Kelly Harris, a junior,
said she was excited about Sugar because
“he’s eager to better himself as a coach”.
The team is currently in their non-cham-
pionship season, where they have time to
prepare for the fall. Sugar said that what
excites him most about coaching at Brevard
is that “the players here are so wilhng to go
to another level. "
