Tennis teams spend spring break in Hilton Head tournament
by Nate Lyles
Staff Writer
When the Brevard College men’s and
women’s tennis programs began five
years ago, many members of the college
community, including the surrounding
area were curious as to how the two teams
would fair
With an extremely competitive confer
ence and a brand new team trying to edge
their way into the mix, sight into the future
of the program was very foggy. However,
each year, with the program’s expansion
and improvement, it is safe to say that the
fog is being alleviated, leaving suimy skies
ahead for BC tennis.
Both the men’s and women’s teams have
made a splash in the news with the most
recent activity in famous teimis destina
tion Hilton Head Island, S.C. While many
students enjoyed the beachside relaxation
that spring break is known for, the BC
teimis teams laced up and hit the courts in
the hope of continuing their season long
success.
In a week’s worth of head-to-head match
es with colleges ranging from Ohio to West
Virginia, BC started out very strong. With
an initial 3-0 record for both teams, the
women’s team set out to conquer No. 36
University of Charleston (W. Va.). With the
match pending on the result ofNo. 3 singles
match featuring Kayley Duval (BC). With
the match tediously coming down to a
two-point decision, Duval relied on her
experience and will to win and decided the
overall match for Brevard 10-8 in the third
set tiebreaker
With the women’s team victorious over
No. 36 University of Charleston, the men’s
team ventured out to test the waters against
division I program North Carolina Central.
With the only win at doubles coming from
the duo of Drew Thompson (BC) and Nate
Lyles (BC), the Tornados fought back to
take the lead in singles with a final victory
of 4-3.
