April 3, 2009 | The Clarion News Page 3 Brevard wins Southeast Canoe and Kayak Collegiate Championships Cigarette Tax, cont. from Page 1 In fact, Thomas says he was the only person in the store for most of the afternoon. This act is the first in a federal anti smoking campaign. The government is also mulhng over the proposition of giving the Food and Drug Administration jurisdiction over the cigarette industry, an act which would likely force tobacco companies to alter the composition of their product. For now, though, smokers on campus are being forced to decide whether they can afford to keep their habit going on a college budget. "1 haven't quit yet, but I'm going to seri ously consider it now," said one student smoker who requested their name not be printed. "It's either quit cold turkey, cut back big time or switch to a cheaper brand. I'll prob ably just cut back with a cheaper brand." Cigars and loose tobacco were also hit with new taxes. The revenue from the move will go toward a health-care program for low-income children. Twenty percent of Americans smoke, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That figure could start to lower rapidly in the coming months with people being forced to pay more for cigarettes during a time when most Ameri cans have less money to bum already. "The economy has just been terrible for this store," said Thomas from his lonely post in Mr Pete's Market. "And 1 can't see this helping us much." photos courtesy C.
