The Clarion | April 3, 2009 Sports Baseball and softball pick up SAC wins by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor After rain led to the cancellation of games over the weekend, the Brevard softball team was able to gain their tirst South Atlantic Conference win of the season, while a day later the baseball team was able to pick up their second SAC win. On Monday, softball hit the diamond for a doubleheader with Catawba College. After dropping the first game of the twin- bill 11-2, the Tornados were able to storm back in game two. Junior Liz Houser did not allow a hit until the seventh iiming as the Tornados built up a 4-0 lead. Despite giving up three hits in the seventh, Houser and company were able to hold on to win the game 4-2. Afterg swept the next day by Tusculum the Tornados record now stands at 11-5 overall and 1-5 in the SAC. The Tornados return to action with a home doubleheader against conference rival Mars Hill on Satur day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The baseball team travelled up 1-26 to take on arch rival Mars Hill in a doubleheader by Kellen Morman and Jackie Com made it 5-4 still in favor of the Lions. In the seventh the Tornados were able to tie up the game, and then Miller hit his second home run of the game, a three run blast, to give the Tornados a 8-5 lead. Despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 7th, the Tornados were able to shut the door and win 8-6. Seth Laughter picked up his second win of the year while Luke Smithson picked up his first save of the campaign. With the win the Tornados improved 8-22 overall and 2-13 in the SAC. Falling behind 4-0 early, the Tornados turned to the long ball to get back into the game. A two-run shot by designated hitter Josh Miller in the fourth was followed by back to back solo shots played at Smokies Park just out side of Knoxville, Teimessee. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled at 1 p.m. Smokies Park is home to the Teimessee Smokies, a double AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Tennis teams pick up wins over Newberry Men's team comes back from two matches down for a rousing 5-4 win by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor After having to wait several days because of inclement weather, the Brevard College tennis teams finally returned to action on Monday afternoon. Both the men’s and women’s teams were able to pick up victories over the Newberry College Nicknamelesses in South Atlantic Confer ence action. The men’s match was a tight affair throughout, with the Tornados taking a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Despite losing the first flight, the Tornados number two and three teams were able to come away with wins entering into singles. In singles competition, Newberry was able to win the top three flights taking a 4-2 lead, however the Tornados came from behind and won the final three matches to take a 5-4 win. With the win the Tornados improve and 12-3 overafl and 3-3 in the SAC. On the women’s side, the Tornados found their opposition much easier In the doubles side of the competition the Tornados won all 3 matches without dropping a game, winning each by a score of 8-0. In the singles half of the competition there was only one match that was relatively close, with sophomore Lindsay Shaeffer defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-3. In the other five matches the Tornados only sur rendered two games to their opponent’s total. The victories even extended to an exhibition match won by the Tornados Emily Barrick 6-3, 6-2. With the victory the Tornados improved their record to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, good for third place in the conference. Both the men’s and women’s team wrap up their conference season this weekend.
