The Clarion | April 17, 2009 Page 2 ■ ■ Opinion — Earthfest to offer something for everyone by Ryan Fiffick Staff Writer This year’s Earthfest is a celebration of the planet we call home and all of its resi dents. Well, except the CEO’s of a dozen or so financial institutions—^Nature abhors a vacuum of common sense, after all. Instead of focusing on the harmful ways our civiliaztion has interacted with the enviroimient, BC Greens decided to raise awareness for the myraid of wonderful ways we can use and re-use what our local ecology can offer while lessening the nega tive impacts of our preferred lifelstyles. With information booths from local green businesses, campus initiatives, a swap meet, workshops on rain barrels, solar energy and paper making, an electric car showcase, and the entire area swarming with individuals offering tips on eco-friend- ly living, any one who attends is garunteed to leave a more informed consumer Information is not the only attraction, however, as face-painting, food, and live music are all part of the day’s line up! Held during Earth Week, on Saturday, April 25 from noon until 6:00 p.m. outside the Porter Center, Earthfest is a reminder to all of us that we are essentially living on the same rock floating in space and that we must be powerful and positive stewards of that rock. ( Unless you feel as Space-Bat did and seek to find greener pastures off the planet. I think we all remember how that one ended up.) Come out on Saturday, whether to have some fun froUicking with granola- munching hippies, learn about the latest in green technologies from carbon-munching techies, or to hstento some great live music from the Mason Jar Drinkers, Wilsin, and several of BC’s own talented musicians while gobbling up lots of delicious locally- grown or produced foods. Get involved, show up, party down and live well!
