■ The Clarion \ A\ News Go Green! Earth Day to be celebrated this Saturday on campus with Earth Fest by Gretchen Allie Staff Writer Earth Day comes around every year to raise awareness of environmental issues in order to improve the world we live in. Earth Day and the values it brings becomes more prevalent as the years come and go because environmental concerns are now greater than in years past. Earth Day was started in the 1970’s by Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin, as a demonstration to raise awareness of environmental issues. On the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans ralhed together to protest the deterioration of the enviroimient. Through the years. Earth Day has grown to involve many countries around the world. On Earth Day in 1990,200 million people in 141 dif ferent countries showed their concerns for the enviroimient by celebrating Earth Day BC will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, with “Earthfest”. The festivities will run from noon to six o’clock on Saturday, and will include local music, arts and crafts activities, a handmade art sale, an electronic car demonstration, a swap meet, and envi- roimiental education activities. Earthfest will end with a series of presentations from Ryan Fiffick, a BC junior. Muddy Sneakers, a nonprofit organization, and Brittney Whitmire, from Busy Bee Farms. These presentations will be held at Dunham Auditorium. In celebration of Earth Day keep these enviroimiental issues in mind... •In the U.S., the main source of water pollution is not chemical waste but the excrement of farm animals. •According to recent studies, 70% of the world’s marine species are at risk of extinction. •Fruits and vegetables go to waste every year because people caimot afford to buy them so Europe spends millions of euros aimually to destroy good fruits and veg etables. The US and Canada have similar food policies. •Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. •50 milhon tons of paper are consumed annually by Americans, more than 850 milhon trees being cut down. •More than half of the world’s tropical forests have been lost.
