Just becoming the tirst team Tornado to
gain a victory in a conference tournament
would be enough for a great many teams
on campus, but not for the women’s tennis
team. They also became the tirst BC team
to upset a number one seed when they
were able to take out top-seeded Tusculum
College on Friday afternoon in the SAC

The annual Athletic Banquet will be held
on Sunday, May 3 at 6 p.m. in the Porter
Center
The whole program will probably last
for approximately a couple of hours and
all student-athletes, their coaches and
members of administration at Brevard
semi-finals.
Entering the tournament with the fourth
seed, the Tornados advanced to the semi
finals with a 5-1 victory over Mars Hill.
Once arriving in Rock Hill, SC, the mo
mentum kept going against the Pioneers
from Tusculum.
In doubles play against the Pioneers,
wins by sophomore Lindsay Shaetfer and
junior Kim Dixon and freshman Lindsay
Hostetter and junior Kayley Duval gave
the Tornados a 2-1 lead. Despite suffering
a loss at number two singles, the Tornados
College will have a chance to attend this
annual event.
Awards will be based on athletic and
academic performance, as well as demon
strated leaderships and class level.
The event will be a chance for the school’s
19 men’s and women’s sports and around
300 student athletes to celebrate their first
year of full membership of Brevard College
to NCAA Division II and South Atlantic
Conference.
were able to keep rolhng with victories by
Shaeffer, Duval and Dixon to clinch the
victory 5-2 over the regular season confer
ence champions.
“It was an amazing feehng to come in here
as the fourth seed and being able to defeat
the regular season conference champs,”
commented Shaeffer “We really stepped
it up against them. ’
The following day, with temperatures
nearing 90 degrees, the Tornados returned
to the court to take on the number two seed
Carson-Newman Eagles. The Eagles took
a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the
competition, with only the duo of Duval and
Hostetter claiming a point for the Tornados.
Despite Shaeffer defeating SAC Player of
the Year Amanda Bartlett 6-4, 6-4, fortune
was not on the side of the Tornados. About
ten minutes after Shaeffer claimed victory,
the Eagles had claimed their fifth point and
their first SAC championship.
The women’s team finished up the season
with a record of 17-6 (5-3 in the SAC). The
future for this program looks especially
bright, losing only one senior (Emily Bar-
rick) to graduation.
“We had a great year. I’ve been blessed
to have quality student-athletes who have
shown great character and resolve on both
teams,” said Head Coach Paul Thompson.
“With almost everybody coming back we ’ 11
be ready again next year.”
Alumni Update
Through the first 19 games of the
season, former Brevard College
pitcher Jordan Hotchkiss is
sporting a 0-0 record and a 3.00
ERA in six appearances with the
Dayton Dragons, a Class A affiliate
of the Cincinatti Reds.
Hotchkiss was assigned to Dayton
this year after spending last year
with the Reds' Rookie League
squad in Billings, Montana.
In his third season of professional
baseball, Hotchkiss has pitched
9 1/3 innings on the season as a
middle reliever, recording seven
strikeouts. More impressive is the
fact that opponents are batting
