Page 2 News The Clarion | Sept. 4, 2009 A letter from the President (no not that one) by Sara McDorman SGA President For those of you who are not famihar with SGA, for those of you who are famihar with SGA’s past, and for those of you who simply give a damn, let me tell you a little about who we are this year The Student Government Association is a student mn organization that represents and serves the students and community of Brevard Col lege. With your involvement, concerns, and ideas, SGA has the ability to make the changes that matter and benefit the campus community as a whole. This year, we are starting a brand new system; one that will be efficient and effec tive. Our intention is to change what has not worked in the past for Brevard’s SGA in order to be as productive and successful as possible. It is the job of SGA to provide a voice for every student, and it is the job of every student to care about their school and community. We have three specific values that we will focus on, and create projects and initiatives that fulfill each of the follow ing areas: Academics, Community, and Enviroimiental issues. SGA is extremely excited about the positive changes we’re making this year, and we want you to be a part of this. Without student involvement, our school will never change for the better Sure, we can sit and complain about all of the problems so many students recognize, or for once, we can band together to change and improve those problems. It’s entirely a choice every student is given: you either care, or don’t. I have enough faith in our student body to believe you’d like to see improvements around our campus. As President of SGA, I vow to you to do all in my ability to be an effective leader and help create a school we can have pride in. In return, SGA needs your commitment to care enough about your own college, that you’re wilhng to get involved. Brevard needs SGA to improve our school and SGA needs you in return. If you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or thoughts- that’s what we’re here for I challenge each and every one of you to be the best Brevard College Student you can be. If you are interested in becoming active in SGA or just learning more about what we do, check out one of our meetings sometimes, they are held every Tuesday @ 8:00 p.m. in MG 102. Also, we have an awesome group of leaders who would love to answer any questions you have or tell you more in formation. Brian Randall is the Vice President Sara Daughtry is Speaker of Clubs Monica Sees is Secretary Erin Craig is Treasurer None of them are scary, I promise, and apparently Brian likes to give people fresh baked bread. I have high hopes for SGA and I have faith that this year we have students who want to make a difference. I look forward to working with you and can’t wait to see what great things we can achieve. Smoking in Beam Hall not advised by Richard Bush Staff Writer August 31st appeared to be a night filled with smoke for students at Brevard College. Fire fighters were brought to the campus by the smoke alarms going of in Beam, which is one of the freshman dorms. The alarm sounded at 8:30 bringing alert to the people around campus. Freshman Lawrence Martin, who is a resident of Beam stated, “I didn’t know what was going on. Hearing that alarm made me think the building was on fire, so I quickly got out.” Clearly that was not the cause here. The smoke detector box shows the exact loca tion and reason for the alarm going off. The alarm was set off due to a trash bag being burnt by a “Black-N-Mild “cigar, which is a tobacco product. A student was smoking in one of the rooms of beam and threw the cigar in the trash can while it was still lit. Remember students, this is why there are designated smoking sections around the campus and NO smoking is allowed in the dorms.
