Nov. 13, 2009 I The Clarion Arts & Life Page 7 Award Winning Poet Visits Brevard by Thomas Lide News Editor Award-winning poet, Terri Kirby Erickson age 51, came to Brevard College on Thursday to present and discuss some her best poetry in the Francis Pavilion of the College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts. Erickson has been writing poetry since her 5th grade year in school but finally began to pursue her poetry career in 2005 when she published her first book. Thread Count. She has pubhshed two collections of poetry as well as 50 poems which can be found in various anthologies and journals. Some of her latest work can be found in Telling Tales of Dusk which was pubhshed in August by Press 53. Scott Owens, editor of The Wild Goose Poetry Review, says “Whether writing about butter mints, the daisy chain of a group of daughters locked arm in arm, or a man burying his dead wife, Terri Kirby Erickson’s poems have the characteristics we all strive for in our poetry. These lyrical narratives are sensuous, tender, evocative, and familiar, bringing to life things we’ve all noticed but lacked the wisdom to put into words.” Erickson was born in North Carolina and has resided in the state for most of her life. She has also lived in other states such as Louisiana, Virginia, and Texas and has made extensive travels throughout her life. Anyone that did not attend the event at the Porter Center and is interested in reading some of Erickson’s poetry should read the poems Battle, Discarded, or Moonflowers. Her work can be purchased on sites such as Amazon and the Press 53 website.
