Nov. 20, 2009 I The Clarion Page 3 — Arts & Life Symphonic Winds performs in Porter Center by Marc Newton Photography Editor A fantastic performance by the Brevard College Symphonic Winds on Tuesday November 17th. A Perfect example of how classical music can hypnotize you into a truly relaxing state. Second year conductor forBrevard College, Kenneth Franklin came up with a diverse set of six pieces from different award winning and composers. Songs such as “Commando March” written by Samuel Barber was both exhilarating and exiting. “Fantasy of a Japanese Folk Song” By Samuel R. Hazo, was written about a heart warming love story between an American man and a Japanese woman. The famous “Pas Redouble” by Camille Saint-Saens, (Originally written for four hand piano) has been used in many well accomplished performances around the world as well as a military marching tune in the mid 19th century. The term Pas Redouble meant the pace the soldiers would march at (90 steps: fast march). This piece really made the activity of each Photo courtesy M. Newton performer stand out because of the different tempos throughout the song. “I thought they were outstanding, there was a wide range of musicians from high school to Brevard College students, to retirees”, said conductor Kenneth Franklin. The musical department has stuck to their mission statement in that the performance shows the musicians have learned technical facility and display a great understanding of the medium they work with. There were 42 musicians playing more than 12 instruments as well as many percussion instruments. The performers have been working hard this semester both inside and outside of class.
