Page 2 News The Clarion \ Feb. 12, 2010 Van Horn, cont. from p. 1 also reminded us that our athletic programs are already at the bottom of the SAC in terms of expenditures and budgets. There was also a questionposed regarding the possibility of Greek Life on campus, a recent hot-button issue around Brevard. While there is no rule against Greek life, Van Horn enumerated the concerns of many students that Greek Life would serve more to segregate students than to bring them together The campus theme of sustainability was another issue addressed. We recently installed new energy efficient boilers which should save us money. However, it does take time for investments in sustainability to produce tangible financial benefits. Van Horn also noted that the new teimis facility is a sustainable building. The big question that students looked to have answered is: what can we, as students, do to help with the college’s finances? Van Horn said that the biggest boon to the college comes from students who have good experiences here and pass these experiences on to acquaintances, thereby helping to increase enrollment. Van Horn again explained that the college would like to see overall enrollment rise to 715 students in the next 5 years and potentially 1,000 students. He also asked that we participate in the NSSE survey and end-of-course surveys so that changes can be made to the campus in order to suit the student’s needs. Most of all. Van Horn said we should have pride in being a Brevard College student and should discourage negativity and ‘naysayers’ around campus, those who are attempting to undermine positive changes being made to the college. Update from BC Students on Immersion Semester by Britney Pittman Contributor Last week the students participating in the Immersion Semester became Leave No Trace Instructors after spending Monday and Tuesday in Pisgah National Forest teaching and learning about the LNT Principles. Though it was quite cold and rainy, the trip was a great start to the semester for everyone in the group. This week (Wednesday- Friday) the group is headed back into Pisgah to practice their backcountry living skills. Note: WLEE majors who plan to participate in the Immersion Semester during the 20I0-201I academic year should attend one of two information sessions on Monday, Feb. 15—at 12:30 p.m. or at 5:30 p.m.Each 30-minute session will be in Ross Hall 1 (front classroom). The meeting will include an overview of the Immersion Semester, a discussion of what to expect during the experience, and details about the application process. Completed apphcations for the Fall 2010 semester are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 1. Attendance at one of these meetings is essential in order to be ehgible to apply for Immersion next year. m ft ^ MONT^Ay-SAm'RlIiAY: ±±-S:30 SHNT^Ay: 12-^ T^AILy ANT^Bee-RL SPeCIAL^! p-RieseNT yoh-rl B-Rieva-rli^ co b Smi^eNT (I> ON ANy SATH'RlIiAy O-RL SHNT^Ay TO -FLBCBIVB lOfo OFF ANy BH-RL-RLITO PLUS ON^ FT^BB T^-RlINK OPBN MIC NI^H-TSAm-RlIiAy, FBB> 13 ANT3 FB^ 201 OFFB-FL qooiy THT^Ol^qH FBB-FLM-RY
