Reader response to 'Don't Ask, Don't Teir
I was very glad to see the article
criticizing President Obama’s plan to
change the policy of “Don’t ask, don’t
tell.” There is really no reason to change
the pohcy as it is not biased either way - it
is a blanket statement.
If I were in the military I don’t think I
would really care whether the person next
to me was interested in men or women, I
would only care that they were rehable in
a combat situation.
If we change “Don’t ask, don’t tell” it
will only serve to distract our military from
their primary job of conducting warfare.
Besides, we are at war right now and
our primary focus should be on getting
our troops home, not the sexuality of those
troops.
Congressman Ron Paul summed it up
best in one of the GOP presidential debates
this past election season: “I think the current
pohcy is a decent pohcy. And the problem
that we have with deahng with this subject
is we see people as groups, as they belong
to certain groups and that they derive their
rights as belonging to groups.
“We don’t get our rights because we’re
gays or women or minorities. We get our
rights from our creator as individuals. So
every individual should be treated the
same way.”

Valentine's Day during tlie recession
by David Alexander
Staff Writer
In these
tough economic
times, when
unemployment is
up to 10%, people
are trying to figure
out little ways
to save money.
I have decided
that in order to
save money this
Valentine’s Day I
rti$Ppr6roKet)
will not have a Valentine this Sunday.
I will not have a diimer reservation to
make, I will not have to fill my car up with
gas to drive anyone anywhere, I will not
have to buy 2 movie
tickets, I will not
have to buy a teddy
bear or chocolates or
flowers, and I will
not have to share
my 12 pack. Also,
I won’t have to buy
a Valentine’s Day
card that was written
by someone else but
says exactly how I
feel about you.
Now you may think that I am a cynic
or that I just can’t get a Valentine, but
neither of those two labels are true. This
Valentine’s Day I am taking my father’s
financial advice on dating. My father’s
advice has three basic rules: 1. Don’t start
dating a girl in November, Christmas is
right around the comer 2. Don’t start dating
a girl until at least March, avoid Valentine’s
Day. 3. If her birthday is in March try and
wait until April.
Every peimy counts in this economy and
tough times often yield tough decisions. I
wiU spend this Valentine’s Day with a $10
scratch off lottery ticket and Lady Luck.
Who knows maybe I wfll actually make
money on Valentine’s Day this year.
SGA Update: Opinions Needed, Action Required
by Meagan Crowson
SGA Senator
At 8:00pm Tuesday, February 2, 2010
a group of Students met in MG 113 to
discuss many of the issues affecting our
campus. Have you ever wondered why
some of the classrooms in MS and MG
do not have the light boards which reflect
light into the classrooms and decrease our
need for electric lights? I know I have!
Wefl it is very simple; the windows in each
of these bufldings are all uniform in size.
That means that the hght boards wifl not fit
in every window. Is this an issue that can
be fixed? You tefl me. Did you know that
as campus committed to service several
of our sports teams volunteer on a regular
basis with children in the community?
I did not. At Brevard Coflege there is a
group of students dedicated to generating
more support for our athletes and bridging
gap between athletes and non athletes. In
addition, who would have thought that we
have an entire group of students working to
find ways to provide cleaner energy to our
campus? Is this every issue that we have?
No, definitely not. That is why you need to
join these students in their effort to improve
our school and make it a better place for
academics, community, and service. Every
other week an open forum is held for
students, senators, club leaders, athletes,
music majors, science majors, math majors,
theater majors, integrated studies majors,
WLEE majors, and everyone in between
to gather as peers and use their voice. We
need your help to ask questions, resolve
problems, and improve our campus! Please,
join us in SGA Tuesday, February 16th at
8:00pm for an open forum. I challenge you
to bring your ideas, questions, opinions
and solution. Tell us what you have to say,
and then take action in an effective and
positive way.
