Page 4 Opinion The Clarion \ Feb. 19, 2010 Don't ask, continued from p. 3 heterosexuals serve openly in the military, and homosexuals should be allowed the same right. There are several people 1 could quote to inspire and motivate for the fight of equal rights. However, 1 know that Brevard College students need no such motivation; inherently in all of us we know the difference between right and wrong. Again and again throughout history the battle for equality has raged on, 1 urge my fellow student body to stand up together and be united in the fight for equality. My experience at Brevard has led me to beheve that this is an open and welcoming campus. A campus filled with passionate individuals who come together and support each other on a daily basis. 1 don’t see that support being given with any reservations about sexuality, race, gender, or rehgion. We are a diverse campus, and a diverse nation, how long will it take us to realize that regardless of everything we are all human beings and deserve equality? Sincerely, Carrie Aime Bowen SGA Update: Proposals, awards, internet discussed by Meagan Crowson Contributor/Senator SGA conducted a senate meeting combined with an open forum this past Tuesday to compensate for last week’s open forum with President Van Horn, which is covered in the February 12 issue of The Clarion. During the meeting proposal were made by Katie Ke lie her for the Haiti movie being shown on Febmary 25; Le Club de Frances’ requested funds for events sponsored by them this semester; Dee Dasburg requested funds gift cards for the upcoming National Health Survey; T.M.O.V.E. requested funds for the upcoming faculty and staff luncheon BUY, SELL, RENTa. cheapbooks. com Textbooks buybacks, multiple online buyers gets you the most cash for your books, even on longer used editions. The senate approved all proposals unanimously. During the meeting, a discussion was opened to propose SGA only funding up to 75% of costs for conferences and trips for clubs. The remainder of the needed funds could be generated through fundraising, education departments, personal funds, etc. This issue was brought up due to the budget cuts made this year and possibly in the future. The new proposal would also encourage students and clubs to participate in fundraising for trips and conferences that benefit them thereby generating a greater sense of responsibility and ownership for the trip or conference. Advisors Awards were given to Mark Adamson as the SGA advisor for the month a January and Jessica Blanford for the month of February. Advisor Awards was a project started by senators Chris Dixon and Jeimifer Nyman in effort to show appreciation to staff and faculty who go above and beyond to support students in extracurricular activities. Clubs are encouraged to contact Chris Dixon or Jennifer Nyman with nominations. “There are still many more deserving advisors supporting our clubs,” states Nyman. Awards are given once a month during the semester Jana Eilermann opened a discussion about Earth Fest and asked for volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering even 5 minutes to help with Earth Fest please contact Jana Eilermann at eilermjk@ brevard.edu. Clubs participating in Earth Fest can use this opportunity as their open campus event, which is required for active club status. Also, during the meeting Brian Burgess brought to the senate’s attention the issues plaguing our internet here on campus. He mainly talked about how slow and unreliable the internet can be at times. Burgess has met with the IT department and discussed possible overall solutions. Currently the best solution would be to place students on individual internet coimections similar to what is available in private homes. Now, 1 know you are wondering why this improvement has not already taken place. It is because the change could potentially increase room rates by $100-$200 a semester The administration at this moment does not currently have the funds to increase the budget for improved internet and does not want to add onto room rates without input from the students. Improved internet in the rooms would mean better internet in the super lab, classrooms, and other locations around campus. In addition, the IT department would finally have time to work on issues such as better wireless around campus. So, do you think better internet is worth paying the same amount you would pay if you lived off campus? Email Brian Burgess (burgesbd@brevard.edu) with your opinions, questions, and ideas. He needs to collect our input (good, bad, and indifferent) as a student body to take to the administration for them to decide if this is a worthwhile endeavor Finally, Mark Adamson wanted to make everyone aware that applications for summer orientation, CAB, and SGA will become available after Spring Break. Therefore, if you are interested in participating in any of these events or organizations keep your eyes open.
