Page 2 In Brief The Clarion \ Feb. 26, 2010 English major presents research on Cedar mountain Brevard College English major Allie Mathews of Brevard recently presented her year-long research project on the Cedar Mountain community during the 5thAimual State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The annual SNCURCS showcases multidisciplinary undergraduate research scholarships from all 53 state and private colleges and universities and 58 community colleges of North Carolina. The BC senior’s project entitled, “A Lifetime of Dedication: Exploring an Idea, Finding an Ideal” is a creative nonfiction narrative based on a collection of interviews with past Cedar Mountain Community Center President Joe Pace. Pace was integral in the development of the center and continues to assist the center thrive 50 years later Built in the 1950s, the community center is one remaining element of the Cedar Mountain Community that retains the essence of the close-knit structure of days gone by. In addition to interviewing Pace, Mathews also used other pertinent information and artifacts, such as aimual scrapbooks, newspaper articles and personal photographs to detail the close-knit community. Last fall, Mathews also participated in the Appalachian College Association’s 12th aimual Summit, “Reaching the 21 st Century Learner,” in Abingdon, Va. Banff tickets now on sale Experience the adventure of adrenahne- packed action sports, mountain expeditions, remote cultures, and the world’s last great wild places - all brought to life on the big screen - when the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20. The two-day event, presented by Brevard College and Sycamore Cycles in conjunction with Brevard College’s Outing Club and Cycling Team, will feature award-wiiming films and audience favorites from hundreds of films entered in the aimual festival in Banff Alberta, Canada. Each evening will feature a different set of films. A complete listing of the festival’s lineup and brief description of each film being shown is available online at www. brevard. edu/banff. Tickets are $10 each showing or $15 for both nights. They may be purchased from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday throughFriday by calling (828) 884-8330 orby visiting the Porter Center Box Office in person. Tickets are also available at Looking Glass Outfitters in Pisgah Forest and atMast General Stores in Hendersonville and Asheville. The film festival doors will open at 6 p.m. each night to give patrons an opportunity to interact with this year’s sponsors. The film showings will begin at 7 p.m. BC Juried Student Art Show opens Feb. 26 The Brevard College Art Department will present a juried student art exhibition from Feb. 26 to April 2 at Spiers Gallery. An opening reception will be held Friday, Feb. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the gallery, which is located in Sims Art Center The presentation of awards will begin at 6 p.m. Paintings, photography and sculpture are just a few of the different types of artwork that will be on display. The show, which is open to all Brevard College students, will be juried by Brevard College Professor Emeritus Tim Murray. Awards will be given for Best of Show, President’s Choice and Students’ Choice as well as first, second and third places. Six honorable mentions will also be awarded. The reception and exhibit visitations are free to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays when the College is in session. The exhibit will be on display until April 2. Spiers Gallery is a contemporary 1,500 square foot gallery located within the Sims Art Center on the Brevard College campus. Exhibitions in Spiers Gallery are ongoing throughout the year and include shows by Brevard College students and faculty members as well as visiting artists from Western North Carolina and around the country. Grad Finale to be held in RDR March 2nd On Tuesday, March 2nd, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Reserved Dining Room of Myers Dining Hall, the Office of the Registrar, King’s Creek Bookstore, and Jostens will be hosting the Grad Finale a special event created especially for seniors that completed graduation requirements in December 2009 or expect to complete requirements in May 2010 or August 2010. Refreshments and door prizes will be available! The grad finale will have representatives from the alumni affairs office, the senior gift committee, the office of career exploration and development, the office of the registrar, the office of academic affairs, the office of financial aid, and the office of business and finance. There will also be representatives from Classic photography and information about how to order caps, gownsa nd other graduation essentials such as caps, gowns and graduation announcements will be provided.
