Page 2 mg The Clarion I Mar. 19, 2 News President Van Horn Addresses Students about Changes by John Climer Managing Editor Earlier this week, President Drew Van Horn e-mailed students to inform them of what can be expected in the future in regards to tuition and fees for the upcoming school year. In his e-mail, Van Horn stated that the he and the administration, working with the Board of Trustees, have been working very hard to minimize hikes in tuition and fees, striving to ensure that increases in student financial requirements remain in line with, if not lower than the state and national averages for private colleges. Furthermore, the college has approved over $5.5 million to be awarded in financial aid during the upcoming school year to returning students and also to new students; included in this total are additional new funds designated specifically for returning PRESS RELEASE- Matt Belsante will bring his Buble/Sinatra golden crooner’s voice and Big Band to Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, March 27. The evening of nostalgia and fun will take place at 7:30 p.m. At twenty-three, Belsante - who grew up on a steady diet of Coltrane, Ellington, Basie and Fitzgerald — performs like a seasoned entertainer well beyond his years. Just out of grade school, Belsante picked up the tenor sax at the age of 12 and became a standard fixture in his middle school and high school jazz bands. But the sax wasn’t his only instmment: he soon found he had a talent for using his voice. By his senior year of High School, Belsante had won the prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in both the vocal and instrumental categories. That affirmation was a turning point for Belsante, as he realized that his true passion was for using his voice to interpret a song. While attending Vanderbilt University, Belsante sang for the University’s Blair students. Some of this financial aid has been designated to be distributed through the Brevard Fellows Scholarship Program, which provides financial aid to students who have demonstrated success either in the classroom or in service and leadership among the campus community. Other ways that the college plans to help students next year is to offer health insurance programs for students. Next year, each student will be charged for health insurance or must provide proof of health insurance coverage to have this fee waived. This plan ensures that no students at our college are without adequate health coverage. Additionally, next year each student will be charged for a parking decal; this fee can be waived if the student doesn’t have a car. To support this decal fee, the college plans to be more rigorous about monitoring parking around campus and will be ticketing School of Music Blair Big Band and lead the Dodecaphonics, an all-male a cappella campus group. The rising star eventually came to the attention of Nashville’s well-heeled music industry following a performance of the Nashville Jazz Orchestra (NJO). That night, the NJO was performing a Sinatra tribute, and Belsante sang many as if he was channeling Sinatra himself. That performance landed him a televised appearance and a chance to record an album of Christmas vehicles that don’t have a parking decal. www.brevard. edu/tuition. Another item of interest discussed by the President, the administration and the Board of Trustees is the decision to close the parking lot between the dining hall and MS. This closure will remain in effect throughout the remainder of the semester as a sort of “trial period” and the administration will ask the board to permanently close this lot in May. The college has also revised its off- campus housing pohcy. The pohcy applies to students currently living on-campus and new students; however, students currently living off-campus are “grandfathered” into the old housing pohcy, providing that they meet the criteria to live off-campus.
