April 2, 2010 I The Clarion News Page 3 ACA Race, continued from page 2 and encompassed several more rapids than the course from Saturday. Along with piloting their canoes through the rapids safely, students also had to navigate two different check-points along the river where teams would switch paddlers for the next leg of the race. It was a tight race all the way to the finish line. Albion College placed first and Brevard College edged out Warren Wilson College for second place. As the final race came to a close, colleges and universities came together in the drizzling rain with the hope of being crowned ACA Southeast College Canoe & Kayak Race Champions. The final results were Albion College in first place and Brevard College just beat Warren Wilson College by one point to take second place. Brevard College student and Paddling Club president Charles Jordan commented on the race noting, “The race was a huge success with the Brevard Paddling Club coming home with 2nd place. I would like to thank everyone who planned, volunteered, raced in and sponsored this event. Without them it wouldn’t have been as fun or as beneficial to the paddling community”. The ACA will be hosting the Collegiate Canoe & Kayak National Championship this fall, October 9-10 on the Tuckaseegee River Through experiences such as the Southeast Collegiate Race and Collegiate National Championship, students can experience the fun and excitement of paddlesports. It is our hope that students will carry these skills and enthusiasm for the sport past their collegiate years and develop them into a family and lifetime activity. Two participants canoe the Tuclaseegee Anonymous 4 returns to Porter Center April 10 Anonymous 4, the internationally known four-woman ensemble that has long been at the forefront of modem interpretation of medieval chant and polyphonic music, will return to Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, April 10. The a cappella quartet will perform a program called Secret Voices: The Sisters of Las Huelgas. Coming on the heels of Anonymous 4’s Four Centuries of Chant recording, the Secret Voices program is a return to the heart of the ensemble’s favorite century. The varied repertoire of 13th and early 14th century polyphony and monophonic Latin song was collected for a Cistercian convent of noble and aristocratic women in north-central Spain. The “Secret Voices” program is structured like a day of music devoted to the Virgin Mary, including a few songs with texts dealing with the daily lives of the nuns themselves. Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine musical, literary and historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition as they create ingeniously designed programs, interweaving music with poetry and narrative. In addition to their uimiatched medieval repertoire. Anonymous 4 has often reached out into the realm of contemporary music, and has premiered works by Peter Maxwell Davies, John Tavener, Steve Reich and Richard Einhom. The group has most recently expanded their repertoire to include traditional music of the British Isles and America. Anonymous 4 has performed in major venues and festivals throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. The ensemble, which performed at Brevard College’s Porter Center in 2006, has also appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” “CBS Sunday Morning,” A&E’s “Breakfast With the Arts” and NPR’s “Weekend Edition.” Anonymous 4’s award-wiiming recordings have attained unprecedented popularity, rising to the top of Billboard’s classical chart, and selling almost 1.5 million copies worldwide. Tickets to the 7:30 performance are $35 for adults and $ 10 for students. They may be purchased from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Porter Center Box Office.
