April 23, 2010 | The Clarion Sports ^ BC spring football game held last weekend by Megan Street Staff Writer Last Saturday, the Brevard College football team held their annual spring game at Brevard Memorial Stadium. Approximately 325 fans came out to cheer the Tornados on and sneak a peek at next year’s team. Although the team had a hmited number of players due to graduating seniors and several injured players, the game went on. However, because the team was short some persoimel, some players ended up playing more than one position. During the spring game, the coaching staff put players through several game-time situations such as two minute drills, and offense and defense in goal line situations. The first string offense played against the second string defense and will be looking to throw the ball a little more in the fall. On the other side of the ball, the first string defense hit the second string offense hard, preparing shake up more teams in the coming season. The team ended up playing for about 2 hours Saturday. The boys show great promise and will open the 2010 season Saturday, August 28 hosting Edward Waters. Kickoff will be at 2p.m. at Brevard Memorial Stadium. 2011 BC Football Schedule Date Opponent Location Time August 28 Edward Waters Brevard, N.C. 2 p.m. September 4 @ Gardner-Webb Boiling Springs, N.C. 6 p.m. September 11 Open - September 18 @ Johnson C. TBD Men's Soccer season comes to a close by Dimitri McCloghry Contributor The Brevard Men’s College soccer season has finally come to a close with a 2-2 tie against Highlands Football Club of Asheville NC. Brevard opened scoring with a early strike ten minutes in the match from sophomore Dimitri McCloghry, but later conceded a goal to make the score 1-1 going into halftime. Just after the second half began, Brevard scored again from a beautiful finish from freshman Landon Reid, with the assist from Renato Barbosa. Highlands scored again to level the match at two apiece, and that’s how it stood. Brevard had plenty of opportunities to level open the match up further, but just couldn’t finish. On April 9th, the Brevard Men’s team played a men’s club team from Spartanbuig, South Carohna and won 4-2. Brevard dominated the match from the onset. Scorers were Renato Barbosa, Ian Baker, Landon Reid, and Dimitri McCloghry. The following day, the Men’s team played Spartanburg Methodist College in a match that saw momentum swing many times. SMU scored first to take the lead midway through the first half. Despite a few point blank scoring opportunities, Brevard couldn’t convert and conceded another goal to go into halftime down 2-0. Brevard picked up the pace starting the second half, and got a goal from Dimitri McCloghry off of a deflection from Niclas Stolt’s shot outside the box. Despite more scoring opportunities, Brevard couldn’t put in another goal, and eventually fell 3-1 from a late score from SMU in the closing minutes. Brevard Men’s Soccer finishes their spring season with a 1-1-1 record. The men’s soccer team only played with 11 players for two of the matches, and 12 for the final match, so the team played with virtually no subs. This shows the level of the team’s fitness, and dedication through hard work and overaU team chemistry to come together and not crumble when the situations became tough. Next season, the team returns many starters and a great recruiting class, so look for more things to come next year as Brevard hopes to qualify for the end of season SAC tournament.
