And then there were 26.
Finishing last fall’s 2009 season with an
overall record of 6-12-1 and a team roster
of 20, coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara and as
sistant coach Caity Brown introduce nine
new freshman players and one sophomore
player to the ever expanding Tornado
women’s soccer squad.
With hopes to change a losing record to
a winning one, Jamie Bundy, Laura Smith,
Lindsay Pritchard, Brittany Webster, Abi
gail Rusch, Crissy Moran, Bree McMahon,
Francie Blair, Elena Crowe and Carohna
Anderson were signed to the Brevard Col
lege women’s soccerteam rosterthis 2010
fall season.
These 10 new additions to the roster
bring not only raw and fresh new talent,
but a drive that has inspired the coaching
staff and the returning 16.
The Lady Tornados pre-season began
Aug. 15 with a tough but determining
two-mile fitness test, which then proceeded
with a sweat-driven 15 level beep test. The
young ladies on the team not only embod
ied fortitude, but portrayed hope, faith and
desire to illustrate to the coaching staff how
much they beheve in a winning season this
season.
“These young ladies are inspiring to
watch,” Brown said Monday after a long
but intensity-filled practice. “With a 2-0-1
record in our pre-season matches, these
Tornados played with their heart, and in
spired the college to believe that this is a
new year, a new season, and a brand new
team to show the conference what BC soc
cer is truly about!”
Sophomore Teresa Musick agrees. “The
freshmen bring an exciting energy on and
off the field,” she said. “They are feisty,
out-spoken, and want to do what is best
for the team.
“They are truly up for the challenge.”
The Tornados have been practicing hard.
Playing their three pre-season games have
been a tough yet rewarding few weeks for
the young ladies as they prepared for the
first game of the season, held yesterday at
Erskine College in South Carolina.
What will be the means for success this
season for the Lady Tornados? “Practice,
practice, practice!” Shinohara said as he
watched the team warm up for Monday’s
practice. “Practice, determination and poise
will be the keys to overcoming a tough
challenge this 2010 fall season for these
26 young ladies.”
Unless they believe that they can tri
umph over the challenges they face this
season, the team will never be successful,
Shinohara said.
“There are four words that the girls cre
ated that they believe embody our team and
illustrate who we are going to be this season
and they are,” he said. “Relentlessness,
