Sept. 10,2010 I The Clarion Campus News Page 3 Art faculty display their work in group show By Danielle Burch Staff Writer At the opening of the annual BC Art Faculty Group show last Friday, students learned what some of their professors do in their leisure. Katherine Mckittrick, a junior art major who attended the show says she “like[s] the Faculty Show because it allows you to see what your professors do in their free time.” This is true of the current exhibition in Spiers Art Gallery, as the show is comprised of a mixture of different media and styles of the Brevard College Art Faculty. At the opening, thirty-nine guests were recorded, excluding class and community members. Carolina Anderson, a sophomore art major who attended the opening said that she, “liked it; all the artwork was fantastic, and the sculptures were [her] favorite.” Aaron Alderman is the creator of some of these very sculptures. Alderman calls his series Urban Fossils, and each piece is representative of the Maza Oyate, which is Lakota for “metal people.” As these students demonstrate, “it is such a treat to see so much excellent artwork under one roof From painting to sculpture to photography to other types of art, there are so many artistic areas covered,” said Professor Michael Bryan. Other work includes Jo Pumphrey's oil paintings, consisting of a series of landscapes arranged in such a way to flow from one canvas to the next. Michael Bryan also has work in the gallery; natural and edited photographs of panoramic landscapes, taking the viewer beyond the lens of the camera. A list of the artists and their media is below: • Tim Murray, former professor and close friend of the arts: wood, steel and enamel sculptures, mixed media collage, and oil, ink and enamel painting. • Lorena Park, ceramics professor: mixed media • J. Aaron Alderman, former spotlight student: cement and steel sculpture • Kyle Lusk, sculpture professor: steel sculpture • David Sheldon, drawing professor: non objective painting and steel sculpture • Ike Wheeless, local printer: photographic advertisement for company • Michael Bryan, computer graphics professor: natural photography and graphics • Jo Pumphrey, painting professor: oil painting • Bill Byers, painting and photography professor: oil painting and photography It’s a real honor to be included in such an interesting show with great depth and quality -goes to show the great talent in the Brevard Art Faculty. Hope all Brevard students get a chance to see it,” said Professor David Sheldon. The show will be on display until Oct. 1. The next body of art that Spiers Gallery will host is the BC Alumni Art show, displayed Oct. 8-Nov 5.
