Football team splits
first two games of season
The BC football team opened the season with
an impressive home win against Edward Waters
before dropping the second game on the road at
Gardner-Webb.
In the first game Aug. 28, the Tornados
overcame turnovers in their first two
possessions, before rallying behind seniors
Michael Crumbaker and Derek Church on
their way to 39-13 halftime lead, defeating
the visiting Edward Waters College Tigers in
Brevard’s 2010 home opener at Asheville High
School, 53-27.
Brevard’s rushing attack led the way for the
Tornados as the team recorded 331 yards on the
ground, picking up 15 of their 20 first downs
through carries. Freshman Kelvin Jeter opened
up his collegiate career with a big game, gaining
121 yards on five carries to go with a touchdown,
while preseason All-SAC second teamer Neville
Bryce also broke the century mark, gaining 110
yards on 14 carries, while finding the end zone
once. Church and Crumbaker also crossed the
goal line twice for the Tornados on the ground
as five Tornados ball carriers reached the end
zone.
One week later, the Tornados scored 14 points
in the fourth quarter, but the 14-0 halftime deficit
was too much as Brevard fell to PCS opponent
Gardner-Webb 28-14.
The Tornados (1-1) were led on the ground
by freshman Thadus Benton as the fullback
gained 78 yards on 20 carries. Jeter also picked
up 78 yards for Brevard on the ground on 17
carries, while Crumbaker had two rushing
touchdowns among his 32 rushing yards. In
the air, Crumbaker was two of three with an
interception, finding Eric Watts on a 27-yard
strike down to the GWU two-yard line in the
fourth quarter, but was sacked five times in
the contest.
Volleyball coach scores
500th win in season opener
Volleyball coach Brenda Skeffington recorded
her 500th career victory Sept. 2 as the Tornados
survived a season-opener five-set thriller over
host Converse College.
Skeffington has coached for 25 years,
including 10 years at Brevard.
Following the win over Converse, the Lady
Tornados won one and lost two at the “Volley
in the Mountains” tournament at Montreal
College Sept. 4.
They opened the 2010 South Atlantic
Conference season on the road Tuesday night
at Lenoir-Rhyne University, taking the Bears
to the limit, before falling in five sets.
Brevard (2-3, 0-1 SAC) was led by the duo
of Kortney Conner and Jamie Atkinson with
nine kills, while Osby added seven kills to the
BC attack.

The Lady Tornados opened their home season
Sunday with a 1-0 loss against the Belmont
Abbey Crusaders, a Division II Conference
Carolina team who last year entered the
Conference Tournament with an overall record
of 14-0-5.
The Tornados (2-1) struggled to create
offensive opportunities, taking only four shots
in the 90-minute match that afternoon.
The first half of the match-up was evenly
battled as both the Crusaders and the Tornados
struggled to place their shots on goal. With a
record of five shots for the Crusaders and two
shots for the BC women, both coming from
junior Bailey Varley, the whistle blew after the
first half, leaving the scoreboard displaying
nothing more than a couple of zeros.
For the BC ladies, this team was a tough start
to another season. For returning players and
coaches, the knowledge of additional upcoming
conference opponents means that the Tornados
are going to have to turn the tables around and
blow the opposition out of the park.
As the ladies headed to the locker room to
discuss strategy for the second half, sophomore
Allie Hovis said, “We’re playing great. We
stepped up our game in the last 20 minutes of
the half, showing them that Brevard will be
going to the Conference Tournament this season
and it will not be decided on the fate of a coin
toss. All we have to do is play our game, focus
on what we worked on in practice, and score
some goals!”
The many fans and students who came to
watch their lady Tornados had faith in what
they were going to bring in the second half, and
Hovis, along with the other 25 girls, were ready
to show them just that.
As time began ticking down in the second half,
the Crusaders managed to fire off three shots on
freshman goalkeeper Brittany Webster, leaving
the Tornados in a 1-0 deficit. The first shot of
the second half was taken by Bailey Varley, but
blocked by senior Crusader Anna Donaldson.
After that, the Crusaders were at ease for the
remainder of the game.
Allie Hovis, one of Brevard’s top goal scorers
last year, was not able to place the ball in the
back of the net as she ran toward the Crusaders’
goalkeeper with 25 seconds left in the game. A
victory was just not in the cards that day for the
26 lady Tornados.
“Belmont Abbey is a good team, last year’s
Conference Carolina champions, and we gave
them a good game,” said assistant coach Caity
Brown. “Our girls battled all 90 minutes and it
was a good showing of how far this team and
this program have come. We’re moving in the
right direction. I’m so proud of them!”
Men's soccer team ties 1, loses 3
The bright spot so far in the young season for
men’s soccer is a 1 -1 tie at home Sunday against
Mount Olive.
The Tornados (0-3-1) were flying out of the
gate, scoring on the third shot when Jami Uuttu
(Naantali, Finland) netted one at the 11:08 mark
on his fifth shot of the season. But BC could not
hold onto the win as Mount Olive scored in the
final minute to tie the match 1-1.
The team’s three losses all came on the
road, against Erskine, Winthrop, and UNC
Asheville.
