Campus News The Clarion \ Sept. 17,2010 Page 2 BC receives new scholarship for women By Danielle Burch Staff Writer Want money? If you are a female from the Appalachian region, Brevard College may have recently obtained a scholarship for you. Over the summer, the Leon Levine Foundation gave BC the funds to provide $5000 to Appala chian women seeking a college degree. Since 1853, Brevard College has tried to help Appalachian families get a college education. The Rev. Laban Abemethy began this tradition when he became the first leader of the college, saying that “none shall ever be turned away for want of means.” Now, almost 25 percent of our student body is from the Appalachian area, and 44 percent of our students are female. Furthermore, 92 percent of our students receive some type of financial aid. With this new monetary gift, “Brevard College will be able to continue to provide educational opportunities for women in the Ap palachian region who otherwise would not have the resources to attend college,” said President Drew Van Horn. Who could be more excited about money than actual college students (or their parents)? Brooke Sturgill, a senior from the Appalachian area, says she is “glad that the Leon Levine Foundation has contributed to Brevard College’s scholarship fund—especially with the rise in tuition—and I hope that this donation will help to empower Appalachian women by furthering their education.” Leon Levine began the scholarship founda tion in 1980, after creating the Family Dollar franchise. Since 2003, Levine has built the foundation “into one of the country’s largest and most im pactful philanthropic organizations,” according to the Leon Levine Foundation homepage. For more information about the scholarship and application process, go to the Financial Aid office in Beam Administration Building. Volleyball team hosted camp after Mars Hill game Saturday The Brevard College volleyball team held a free volleyball clinic this past Saturday after their match against Mars Hill College for the Girl Scouts of Asheville, as well as all youth who were at the game. The Tornados and coach Brenda Skeffington helped teach the young players how to serve and receive, as well as the basic fundamentals of the game.
