Sept. 24, 2010 | The Clarion Sports Page 7 Lady Tornados draw 0-0 with Warriors By Chantel Azevedo Staff Writer BC Women’s Soccer Team was unable to defeat the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan last Saturday afternoon. Neither the Tornados nor the Warriors were able to put a score on the board. The match finished in a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of play, leaving the Tornados with an overall season record of 2-3-1 so far The match both began quite slowly, and ended quite slowly as the BC women fought hard to take four shots in the 90 minutes of regulation time allotted, plus the double overtime that was played. The first header and shot on net coming from performing freshman Elena Crowe came with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation time. “The women were struggling to play the offensive game that they have displayed before to their coaches and fans. The lady Tornados always fight hard and always finish well as shown in their previous games played, but last Saturday’s tie was a disappointment not only for the young ladies’ coaches but for the fans, and especially for the ladies themselves,” said sophomore teammate Allie Ho vis. Freshman Abigail Rusch, junior Alyssa Caracena, and freshman previous goal scorer for the Tornados Jaime Bundy, all fought against the senior Warrior goal keeper Carissa McNab, to rattle off one shot a piece in the 110 minutes of play given. The Southern Wesleyan Warriors performed well as they fired off 13 shots against freshman goal keeper Brittany Webster Webster played the entire regulation time allotted of 90 minutes and the double overtime, giving her 110 minutes of play with no goals against. “She came out strong and made sure that she held her own, coming out of the game with a well deserved shot-out,” said sophomore teammate Hannah Graham. The Warriors also outplayed the Tornados in comer kicks with a 9-0 opportunity. The Tornados struggled to produce a comer kick against the SWU Warriors. This was not an accomplishment for the ladies as they know that comer kicks are some of the best opportunities. The Brevard women will host their first conference match at home against the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters. This will be the BC lady Tomados’ first conference match of the 2010 season. BC road cycling victory Collegiate road racing begins in Febmary, but the BC road cycling team has already taken their first victory at the South Carolina State Road Championships. Freshman Keith Marek won the Men’s Category 4 Road Race by out-sprinting his remaining competitors in the final 300m of the 45 mile race. “It was a fast race with a lot of attacking”, said Marek. “We had some good teamwork. Squeak (Caleb Welbom) gave me a great lead out for the final kilometer for the sprint. At first I thought I started the sprint too early but I managed to hold it for the win.” Because he is not a South Carolina resident, Marek is not considered to be the official category 4 state champion. Men's golf finislies 3rd, Rennie wins playoff Friday to Tuesday the men’s golf team eamed a top 3 finish in two toumaments at the North Greenville invitational. Michael Stamper finished with a two round score of 150 leading the team to a 8th place finish of the 10 competing. The North Greenville Invitational proved to be a formidable test for the team as well with no rest from walking 36 a day prior the Tomadoes were back on the links at Cherokee Valley. Tom Rennie led the team shooting a two day score of 146, eaming his first collegiate win in a playoff The Tomadoes took their first top 3 finish of the season behind Rennie's strong performance. Volleyball falls at Newberry Jordei Osby led the Tomados with seven kills. Kortney Conner and Jamie Atkinson each had six, but it was not enough as Brevard fell on the road in SAC competition on Saturday to Newberry, 25-15,25-23, 25-16. Brevard held the early lead in the first set, going up 4-2 on kills by Stevenson and Atkinson, but the Wolves fought back, tying the match up at five. Erin Rollins tied the match up again at seven for the Tomados four points later with a kill, but the Wolves went on a 5-1 mn on their way to a 12-8 lead and the Tomados were unable to come any closer in falling 25-15. Newberry opened up the second set by scoring the first four points and held the lead through most of the set before the Tomados came back on a kill by Jamie Atkinson and a Newberry attack error to tie the set up at 17. The Tomados had another kill in the set by Conner, but a BC error closed out the set in favor of the Wolves.
